They were flying F4 Phantoms when I was aboard the Forrestal. I think they got the boars head emblem off of some gin bottle back when the squadron was first formed.
Taken from my Med cruise book. My Viet Nam cruise book didn’t have a photo showing the VF-11.
I actually painted all of our original Hornets. You can tell its the one i painted because we screwed up the roundel on the GAG birds. we accidentally used the F14 stencil for the base and the stripes and the star is the smaller f18 stencil
What did you do? Were you a plane captain? I was an FT (now called FC) and ship’s company, aka black shoe. You airedales were called brown shoes when I was in.
Ellington for me, grew up about 1,000 yards from runway 17. Naturally fell in love with the viper and still today watching the T38s.
In fact when i lived off highway 3 as an adult, i lived at the base of runway 35. Back when the Tulsa air national guard crashed not one, but two F16s… never hire an Okie to do a Texan’s job
I was Aviation Ordnance, think airplane GM, at that time i was in the corrosion control shop. Mostly we did the painting and took care of the stealth coating. Mixed rate shop since we had to have someone for all the different components we would end up messing with. We did a full strip down repainted from the base coat up, every single marking on 10 aircraft. I did the tail with nothing but a yardstick pencil and tape.
Notice the smile on my face when I was separated and got my reserve ID card. I only had a year of inactive reserve left because I served in the reserve for a year before I transferred into the regular navy. Do you know if a 4 year enlistment still require 2 years in inactive reserve before your actual discharge?
Navy has done special things to represent for a long time, but that meant patches on their regular uniforms, and patches on the gold helmets…I liked last year’s blue on blue…but this year’s white on white was just too boring. Navy has also worn gold on gold, and thats a good look, too. You should always want to look good against your traditional rival.
