2025-2026 Houston Cougars Basketball Season

We were the #1 KenPom rated defense last yr, because of guys like J’wan.

He was a solid lost post scorer, great rebounder, very good passer in the post.

But, J’wan Roberts guarding on the perimeter was a problem for us. Teams knew to get him matched up on a guard/stretch 4 & you’d have success

His closeouts on the wing, i thought were too slow. So defensively, we could be more versatile, with 6’6ft Harwell, Ramon, Mccarty. Playing the 4.

@pesik Francis was very underrated. You dont think Sakho + McFarland can match Francis production?

Me and Coach Sampson don’t agree. If Coach did he would not have put Jwan on Cooper Flagg in the clutch. Can you point to a particular game you seen Jwan get exposed defensively? I don’t recall such activities. I’m not disagreeing or debating, but what games come to mind?

@KenJourney i must have bad memory. Watched some of the games over again. He didn’t get burned as much i thought. Ill retract my previous statement. J’wan not a bad perimeter defender

blind optimism wants me to be hopefully
objective reasoning tell me no

francis and tugler were scary elite defenders before UH… francis was doing 10blks a game in the junior high school playoffs

sakho looks the part, but his stats dont … 1.4 blocks a game on 25mins, not terrible; block rate worse than francis but okay… the context is what makes it woorse… blocks stats should be MASSIVELY inflated in the midmajor… mid majors normally lose half their block rate when yu mve up … johni broone dropped from 4blks a game to 2blks when he jumped a level… sahko isnt the natural defender francis is

mcfarland was a elite shot blocker in high school but 2 full seasons of not playing and still only being 215lbs does make me have my doubts … but a possibility

Big props to your humbleness. Coogs biggest weaknesses was scoring droughts though.

Jojo Sahko
Cenac McCarthy
Harwell Mercy
Sharp Kordell
Milos Fleming

It will be interesting if teams can beat the Coogs with non apparent weakness.

nasty mercy dunk

I don’t view it as the biggest loss. Every team will win differently and this one is talented and deep. One thing I hope this team can find to make things smoother is easy buckets. J’Wan could do it spurts but was an extreme rhythm player. This can come in the form of rebounds, getting inside the D of post ups. I think Jojo will give us quite a bit of what Fabian did with the interior jump hooks and short jumpers but he’s more explosive. I think Milos takes the next step in becoming a finisher and KF will help here. Sharp will take another step forward in being an all around player but his main attribute will be the daggers from deep. As the season progresses I am interested to see how much of a role Cenac will play to get some easy buckets. Now by the remote chance none of this happens, our culture, defense and three point shooters will be enough to win 80-90% of our games.

i think the great spacing and rebounding should help with that

the “easy” bucket has been elusive to us most years … which has played a role in us having droughts … but a part of that is weve have been a badly spaced team for most of it…
teams have been able to crowd the post on us without consequence for some years now …

this is why we’ve lived off 3s, and long floaters,

next year we should have; you beat your guy off the dribble you have a clean lane to a layup … or a shooter wide open too swing it too

The “issue” for me was that we would have both our bigs guarding on the perimeter and teams would often exploit that for easy buckets underneath. Overall though, can’t argue with the success!

Go Coogs!

Jo Jo guarded guards really well, used to get a kick when announcers mistook JoJo as a mismatch just to watch the guard get locked down and locked up

You are speaking of matchup disadvantages that rarely occurred. Francis, Roberts and Jojo were all phenomenal at switching and defending on the arc. The one time I recall getting hurt by the matchups was the Sweet 16 loss to Duke and that guy is playing in the NBA.

@pesik if you had to say right now, whos that 3rd starter?

Mercy, Harwell or Kingston. Whos your guess?

I think it’s a pure guess at this point. If the season started two weeks ago, I think it would’ve been Kingston. I’m going to guess and say by November Harwell is going to be in that spot.

Looks so far away from retirement

Harwell would’ve been my guess too, but come conference time. From our coaches interviews, the sense we got was that it is almost a certainty that they’re going to go w/ Flemings and allow Uzan more scoring opportunities. And they’re going to take it very slow w/ Harwell as he’s apparently still recovering from his injury.

We have incredible possibilities for our starting 5, and our next 5. :basketball::grin:

Could see a lineup with KF, Milos, Eman, Harwell, Jojo.
