I have liked Trent Walker since I first saw him, but he’s gotten even better since the spring. Routes are tighter and he’s separating against the starting CBs.

That bodes well for the season. Starters look strong and two backups could be starters, the others are young. I’m trying to temper my expectations but everything is lined up for an excellent season

I think this season, Paris Melvin Jr.'s way to the field is DB and ST.
Willie pretty much gives the first 3 teams equal reps in the first few weeks of fall camp. Gives the staff a chance to evaluate everyone.
Noah Abebe has been getting a good bit of work at center (3rd team) and some at RG. Love to see young guys already working on multiple positions.

Versatility, depth, and constant evaluation.
Sounds a lot like “program building”.
The ability to adjust the offensive plan to take advantage of an opponents weaknesses is something Willie has always done.
This is where the versatility and depth pays off.
As easy as it is to default back to talking about the offense (a thing most fans tend to do), I’ve gotta say the ability for this defense to get after the opposing QB, get stops on 3rd down, prevent explosive plays, and GET turnovers are the things I’ll be focused on more than anything…
…except of course… the o-line.

They won’t identify the returners until around the time school starts (Aug 24). They rotate a lot of guys during punt/kick returns drills early in Fall Camp. My guess as of today is that Trent Walker will return punts, and Amare/Trent as primary KOR, and Makhi Hughes on the field side.
There are no live drills so far, so hard to say how they’ve looked. Right now, it’s really about technique with the 9/10 other guys on the field. A lot of focus on that - not much on returns. There will be a scrimmage on Thursday night - so we’ll get to see some returns live.
That said, special teams is the most fluid group in the first 8-12 practices and can/probably will change.

Are the kickers doing better on “kicking deep” on kickoffs? Our field position given up on kickoffs had to rank very low last year. Willie addressed this at the end of the year, so we know Willie found a solution.
