That plant was originally a Ford Motor Company assembly facility. Then Maxwell House. The last owner was a smaller local coffee company.
Did you go to the Chug-a-Lug Park get together?
An old timer I used to work with attended UH in the 50s. He used to tell me about the horrendous smell from the old slaughterhouse/meatpacking plant across the railroad tracks from UH. ![]()
I never complained about the Maxwell House… or the Rainbo Bread bakery on Cullen! ![]()
Rainbo was down there by Mandola’s Deli, right?
Yep. Not sure if it’s still there… I don’t get that way too often anymore. Mandolas Deli is a good reason to go though.
I think it’s still some kind of bakery.
I love hitting up Mandola’s when I get a chance.
They close a tad too early on UH basketball weekday games, which is my only complaint. They close at 6, which is the perfect time to roll in there for an 8 p.m. tip-off game at Fertitta. I guess since this is a UH baseball thread, opting for Mandola’s vs. the baseball game is a good option.
I attended in the 70’s and I can attest to the awful smell.
He’s been here 16 years.
Between the Coogs and the Astros, baseball has been just so wonderful this year.
Awful admin n both sides
First game against Arizona starts at 8pm. Since our BYU series, this is the only series I gave UH a chance to take 2 out of 3.
Coogs at #110. Arizona at #178 after making it to Omaha last year. Trip Couch is in his 5th season there. Sean Kenny’s 1st year with them, his 4th team in four years.
I’ll take sinking like an anchor one year if you give me Omaha every so often. Just please don’t give me sinking like an anchor every year.
I think that’s just “sunk,” which fits.
Whoever the new coach is, he’ll get his regulation ONE “freebie” sucky first season.
Just as Sampson and Fritz got theirs.
Coogs win game 1 7-4.
Nunez is already preparing Whitting’s extension if we win another one (/sarcasm…I hope)

One of the first calls after this season should be the Southern Miss head coach. Consistently top 25 team with regional appearances. Could probably double his salary - and he had a stint in north LA at LA Tech so knows the recruiting grounds probably.
Arizona is wearing Houston Blue uniforms.
