2026 UH Baseball

Coogs drop the final game on the road 6-5.

Dream scenario for next week. Coogs crush Rice on Tuesday. Immediately after the game, Whitting announces his retirement and the AD introduces numerous promotions for our last home stand, including free parking to thank Coach for his years of service. The players finally get to play in front of the crowds UH baseball deserves.

I predicted we’d take 2 of 3 in this one. It was the only series I had us winning after the BYU series.

My conference predictions after BYU:
0-3 at WVU (we went 1-2)
1-2 at TCU (we went 0-3)
1-2 vs Cincinnati (we went 0-3)
2-1 at Arizona
0-3 vs Arizona St.

If we get 1 game vs ASU, my number of conference win will be right, just against the wrong teams.

UH would have to sweep ASU and have Tech be swept Cincy to make the conference tournament
.

Cincy might sweep Tech but doubtful we get all three from ASU.

If you don’t know who Landon Hairston is you should look him up
.kid from ASU can absolutely rake.

so youre saying there’s a chance

Let’s sweep Rice.

Here is an interesting stat I saw on uhcougars.com:

Quote: Houston has three wins against ranked opponents this year, including significant wins against #2 Texas on March 24, #15 West Virginia on April 17 and #21 Wake Forest on Feb. 13. The schedule is the 31st most difficult among Division I teams with 34 games so far against Top 100 teams and 18 against Quad One foes.

Also of note, Bama is currently ranked, and we beat them as well.

Not that any of that makes up for our overall crappy season, or justifies keeping our coach, but it does seem to suggest that, if nothing else, we aren’t scheduling patsy opponents.

When you have a team capable of beating those teams and then finishing dead last in an average conference that tells you something is horribly wrong.

You beat a few of the best teams in the country
.but can’t make your conference tournament :joy:

They got significantly worse as the schedule got easier
.

They have not had a bunch of injuries to meaningful players.

So where does the blame lie? It’s coaching 100%.

This guy has not developed players, nor has he managed to get the best of these players.

There are reasons why this happens
.i won’t get in to details but common sense tells you things are not kosher in the clubhouse.

I concur.

The only questions remaining are:

  1. Who should the new guy be?

  2. Can we get our preferred “new guy” easily? AND

  3. If we can’t, then who would be a “good enough” new guy that we can definitely get?

It’s “yes” to all your questions.

Houston, in the Big 12 is a coveted job.

There will be a ton of interest
.but I have a very short list I would prefer.

Coogs up 12-0 over Rice, bottom 3rd.

If Kansas can get it right then the Coogs surely can!

Coogs 14-3, b5.

Dang, how far Rice has fallen.

They’ve been bad for better part of a decade.

Rice has looked absolutely horrible in the three Silver Glove games this season.

But if you look at their overall season, they’ve made a huge improvement. 17-40-1 in 2025, and 31-22 thus far in 2026. At a glance, looks like they’ve recruited a couple of highly rated local HS guys for next year.

Pierce has them headed in the right direction.
They finished at #209 last year and are currently #72.
By contrast, we finished 2025 at #93 and are #106 today.

Broussard thrown out at the plate trying to steal home with 2 outs. This **** gets old.

That might work against the Manhattan Jaspers, but against the #22 team in the country?

Hopefully there aren’t too many more chances to find out.

I don’t trust Nunez. Can’t say why. I just think he’s passing through and would jump to get out of here. One thing is for sure. He wasted a year of putting the baseball feather in his cap. He can’t take credit for Sampson or Fritz. And no one cares about women’s basketball. If he wants to move on he should try to fix baseball.
