Dream scenario for next week. Coogs crush Rice on Tuesday. Immediately after the game, Whitting announces his retirement and the AD introduces numerous promotions for our last home stand, including free parking to thank Coach for his years of service. The players finally get to play in front of the crowds UH baseball deserves.
I predicted weâd take 2 of 3 in this one. It was the only series I had us winning after the BYU series.
My conference predictions after BYU:
0-3 at WVU (we went 1-2)
1-2 at TCU (we went 0-3)
1-2 vs Cincinnati (we went 0-3)
2-1 at Arizona
0-3 vs Arizona St.
If we get 1 game vs ASU, my number of conference win will be right, just against the wrong teams.
Quote: Houston has three wins against ranked opponents this year, including significant wins against #2 Texas on March 24, #15 West Virginia on April 17 and #21 Wake Forest on Feb. 13. The schedule is the 31st most difficult among Division I teams with 34 games so far against Top 100 teams and 18 against Quad One foes.
Also of note, Bama is currently ranked, and we beat them as well.
Not that any of that makes up for our overall crappy season, or justifies keeping our coach, but it does seem to suggest that, if nothing else, we arenât scheduling patsy opponents.
Rice has looked absolutely horrible in the three Silver Glove games this season.
But if you look at their overall season, theyâve made a huge improvement. 17-40-1 in 2025, and 31-22 thus far in 2026. At a glance, looks like theyâve recruited a couple of highly rated local HS guys for next year.
Pierce has them headed in the right direction.
They finished at #209 last year and are currently #72.
By contrast, we finished 2025 at #93 and are #106 today.
I donât trust Nunez. Canât say why. I just think heâs passing through and would jump to get out of here. One thing is for sure. He wasted a year of putting the baseball feather in his cap. He canât take credit for Sampson or Fritz. And no one cares about womenâs basketball. If he wants to move on he should try to fix baseball.
