You’re right. A well put together freshman.
I’m intrigued about Jackson too. When he was a sophomore, pre injury, he was the #1 ranked player in his class in Texas. Lauren also mentioned him on our podcast.
Against some matchups I can see us going smaller and using Jackson/Chase at the 3/4,
There will also be times Chase fouls twice in the first half which might give Jackson some opportunities.
2 players I knew very little about before seeing them live were Larry and Barkley. The Indiana St vs UH NIT Game at Hof was an amazing basketball game. I had read about Bird but ever seen him play. All I could say during that game was who the hell was this white kid…holy crap!!! Bird and Birdsong traded punches the entire game. It was epic.
Auburn visited the Hof during PSJ. Barkley was 6-5 and weighed 270. All I could say was…this football player sure can hoop! Charles was a freak of nature.
I was in 9th grade, too young to drive so I asked my dad if he wanted to take me to the game. No dice. Before today all I could find were highlights of the game. This morning I found the entire broadcast! Before most of the country got cable TV Indiana State’s games were on cable TV. So this is their broadcast. For younger Coog hoops fans, this is must see TV!!
Chase and Jackson look like prototypical small forwards to me. I like what that brings to the table.
I think Jackson is a legit 6’6”
Remember before the game against Auburn our fans were ranting on Barkley for being “chunky” lol. He smiled and jumped a foot over the rim and lay the ball in the basket.
Those rants stopped.
Chuck was an amazing athlete….he had no business being so damn good in that body….although it did not translate to his golf “game”.
Nowadays, the term “coach” also encompasses youth/AAU coaches as well. Big difference in the level and type of knowledge between a school coach (someone who makes their living as a coach) versus someone who coaches as a side hustle (often among many other ‘hustles’).

The round mound of rebound
I was at the NIT game with Bird vs Birdsong. UH won in a thriller, 83-82. Bird was unstoppable with 44 points and Birdsong had 30 points. I tell people, Bird won the battle, UH won the war.
I tell the story that Bird took the last second shot, missed, Indiana St. thought he was fouled, and maybe he was…and maybe he wasn’t,
and an Indiana St. Asst. Coach furious, threw a towel at the referee on the court right after the buzzer sounded.
I can still close my eyes a see that final short range jumper rolling round and round the rim before falling out.
Of course I also remember just a few short years ago a BYU shooter doing the same thing at the buzzer but that ball went in and we were all stunned with the home loss.
But none will ever hurt as much as Lorenzo Charles
Crisco Kid
The only blemish on Dream’s entire career was not boxing out on “the play”.
And we are forced to watch it every year at tournament time ![]()
Guy told me several years after that “Hakeem thought Bennie (Anders) had stolen the ball and decided to take off. He left it open for the dang dunk. I bet he will never do that again.”
I remember that game against Valpo well. E scored 62 points and had 27 rebounds, and just before he was pulled late in the game he sank one from maybe 25 feet.
Comparisons between frosh back in the day and frosh today aren’t fair, because the elite frosh today arrive at college with a depth of training and experience that was undreamed of then. Birdsong took a huge leap after one year of competing at the college level. His second year he went for over 24 per game, with 56 per cent shooting. I wonder what Flemings would have done his second year. Not saying he couldn’t have matched that, but it’s a pretty high bar.
And now he gets paid to pitch weight loss drugs. ![]()
