You also need to look at Inside 20 stat vs just gross and net. The game is field position not yards.
Whoa, there Law. You just shocked me! If you don’t think any of our experts on this board don’t know how to teach punting, you have probably insulted at least 20-30 posters. Back off, man. Where’s the civility?
There are many ways to be an effective punting team. In my opinion, CMA Is not utilizing the full potential of Roy. There are many times when one style of punting does not work for the team that you are playing.
If you are playing a team with excellent returners, then Applewhite’s approach works best. If you are playing a slower team without much of a run back threat, use our outside speed down field to pin them back with a longer punt attempt.
To rely on one style of punting the entire season is shortsighted at best.
I don’t think punting should be the concern on special teams. Have you seen a return for more than 15 yards this year? We aren’t dynamic in that category at all. Bryson needs to make one move and go, and Stevenson on KR is asking for trouble. Not really a fan of starting skill players returning kicks.
I have to admit - it’s been quite some time since I last saw someone criticizing the head coach for not maximizing the potential of … the punter.
Yeah…I have to admit it’s a little strange
But in my defense, my son was a punter/kicker in college and I still tend to focus on special teams. The coaching does make difference, both in technique and strategy. A lot of games decided by special teams in subtle ways.
I was expecting 75 yard punts on a whim since he’s been here as well… but as others have pointed out including my friends, he has definitely been very effective in his game. It’s a see vs stats objective if you will. But it sure would be fun to see Dane get pissed off and boom one 75 yards once… the more goofy stuff he does off the field, the more it makes me think everytime he’s on the field he has that sheat-eating grin going on behind that facemask and it’ll be kinda sad when he’s left the program.
I think he’s terrific. Close to a 45 yd average, seldom atre his punts returned and he’s nails killing it inside the 20. I guess I’m watching a different guy than some of you.
I would like to see the stats a little closer. It appears (again appears) that his “touch” is not “right” Let’s look at how he compares with other punters:
I believe these stats are only after four games. I do not have the time right now but let’s have someone look at the number of punts inside the 20. These are concerning numbers.
If I remember correctly, he has 7 punts inside the twenty…without a lot of research, you can’t tell how many are inside the 10. A great stat is that he has no touchbacks…he is making the short field work to our advantage.
Again, my gripe is not with Roy, but with how the coaching staff is using him…let him loose when the situation warrants it! His average is 41.2 with a 39.8 net. His leg is stronger than that. We need to take advantage of our coverage speed and quit being so darned conservative when we don’t have to.
