The free market doesn’t care about mental health
So just like climate change or mass shootings, it’s a externality that has to be ignored by the market
That’s not always true permanently. Examples - tobacco, asbestos, worker safety in factories, lead in gasoline/paint, pollution control, etc.
Consumers, costs, and regulation can change things. Something has to cause that though.
Add in CFCs to that list too…
As for mental health, I don’t have data to post, but I suspect many of the pharmaceutical companies have large pipelines of drugs in development for “mental illness” . So not sure it’s 100% correct to say free market doesn’t care about mental health.
As a society, we don’t seem to be dealing with
people with mental illness that are living on the streets. Oh we will periodically round them up as criminals and send them off to jail (?).
There is data on harris county jail inmates on
psychiatric drugs…I recall it’s about 26% of inmates.
Real life super villain is weighing in on regulating AI usage
Regulating AI hastens the antichrist? That just sounds lik crazy talk to me.
Nut bag with wealth is still a nut bag.
He has previously suggested that Greta Thunberg could be the Antichrist,
If that’s the case, then why have mental illness rates gone up?
Why is obesity starting to spike again after the ozempic era?
Better and wider definition of diagnosis of the condition would be my guess.
Like with autism to some degree.
Here is the AI summary of the situation. Don’t think it points to an indictment of free markets or capitalism per se. But just my opinion; believe whatever you like.
“While precise investment figures for mental health drug research and development are not readily available, overall private pharmaceutical R&D spending was around
$83 billion in 2019, and the global mental disorder drugs market was valued at $36.77 billion in 2020. Despite this significant market, investment and innovation in mental health drug development have historically been low relative to the burden of disease, though there are signs of increased investment in recent years due to promising new treatments and acquisitions, such as Bristol Myers Squibb’s $14 billion acquisition of Karuna Therapeutics.
Overall Pharmaceutical Investment
- General R&D Spending:Private investment in drug R&D by major pharmaceutical firms was about $83 billion in 2019, with similar trends observed across the industry.
- Mental Health Market:The global market for mental disorder drugs was valued at $36.77 billion in 2020.
Investment in Mental Health Drug Development
- Historical Underinvestment:Investment and innovation in mental health drug development have historically been comparatively low, especially when compared to other major diseases like cancer or cardiovascular disease.
- Recent Growth:There are signs of a renewed focus and increased investment in neuropsychiatry, with major companies like Bristol Myers Squibb making significant acquisitions, such as their $14 billion purchase of Karuna Therapeutics.”
Fair enough
Tylenol
lol
From CNN so you know.
The other place AI is going if we let the super villains continue their reigns.
You sound like UH1927/Cullen when you keep repeating the same thing over and over ad nauseam.
The demand for AI-driven data centers is continuing to be measured by market speculation.
AI as a standalone product is still unprofitable. Unless you’re a Google-type company where you have a multitude of products on the market to enhance your balance sheet, you won’t be making any money besides continuing to promise investors an AI breakthrough (in this case, AGI) which is what many investors are waiting for.
Where Sam Altman shines at is saying a whole bunch of nothing that investors take as genius. Sam continues to question his own product while saying just enough to keep investors invested.
AI, Data Centers, SMRs, etc are all incorporating market speculation into their value rather than just using actual value.
This is a bubble, and it’s going to pop eventually once investors can no longer keep their money in these technologies without seeing return.
