Great memories of Calgary and Banff. But I was always there in August and September, friends told me that January, February could gin up a few nightmares.
This referendum is unserious and likely to fail by upwards of a 2:1 margin. At least when Quebec tried this it made a little sense given how culturally different they are from the rest of the country.
Alberta is pretty different from the rest of the country.
Alberta is also quite a bit different from the rest of Canada though, culturally speaking.
Make no mistake about that.
It has much more of a cowboy/western/oil economy feel than the rest of Canada…
Ever heard of the Calgary Stampede?
It’s also more politically conservative than most of Canada.
Alberta is basically the Texas of Canada.
That said, I agree. It’s a long shot.
But what if?
I mean, sure, but they still speak the same language as the bulk of the rest of the country, and vote for largely the same set of parties. For what it’s worth, the non-Vancouver parts of BC are pretty conservative, too. If Alberta is the Texas of Canada (a fair comparison!) then Quebec is their Puerto Rico.
I also think it lends more validity to Québécois independence that the concept seems to cut across ideologies there rather than Alberta, which seems to rattle sabres about independence if and only if there’s a Liberal majority.
Quebec is their Louisiana.
French civil law instead of English Common Law.
Seems to mirror what happens here. Check who was in office any time illegal secession was discussed in the States.
People in California are proposing it right now.
And it’s not the first time. It came up often after the 2016 election.
They’ve also proposed dividing CA up six ways.
Yes, and who is behind it?
People that didn’t like the result of the 2016 election for one.
And likely the same in the 2024 election.
Agree it’s a super long shot, but if it happened would BC be far behind?
Bear Flag Revolt!.. just like in the Fallout game and show
Hey Alberta…Come on down!
You would be wrong buddy, because those are two different issues.
Very misleading.
One poll suggests that 44% of Californians would vote to secede if they had the chance.
A more recent poll from same company put it at 27% when focused on secession. That’s in line with Texas.
Some of the delta is likely from how the question was asked and also some probably from timing.
Wait.
So CA and WA are the two most secessionist states?
And MN is tied with TX?
Wow.
Blows the narrative doesn’t it
I’m guessing it shifts based on who is in office.
I’m honestly surprised Texas is as high as it is right now.
I wonder how this compares to those who want their state to divide into more than one state.
