The Bunce brothers… I know one of them transferred to BYU Hawaii but never heard anything more. The original twin towers.
BYU has a Hawaii campus?
Yes at one time they did. Believe they still do.
Having lived in Hawaii for 3 years, I can confirm, YES, they do.
There’s BYU Main Campus in Provo, BYU-Idaho in Rexburg, Idaho, and BYU-Hawaii north of Honolulu.
My time to shine…
All BYU schools are separate entities with different purposes. It’s not like Texas University that has a campus in a million towns.
BYU — the premiere school, hard to get into, prestigious (relative to the others)
BYU-Idaho — the school everyone can get into, runs on trimesters to get more students
BYU-Hawaii — largely serves the Polynesian community. Not Polynesians can get in, but it’s mostly Polynesians. The Polynesian cultural center in Hawaii is owned by the lds church and employs BYU-Hawaii students.
LDS business college (in Salt Lake City) — mostly a two year college outside of business, very diverse
BYU Pathway worldwide — this is the LDS church’s greatest gift to man kind. It is currently expanding, but you can take college classes online or in person around the world and tuition is based on the local area’s economy. Basically, people in Africa are able to earn bachelor’s degrees for a few dollars a credit hour. It has a campus in Africa, but serves world wide and is rapidly expanding.
BYU-Hawaii and BYU-Idaho used to have sports programs but the LDS church will not allow sports to go in the red. The church is not going to go in debt or spend money on sports. (We teach self reliance courses, and it’s a big part of our culture) they couldn’t pay for themselves anymore so they got canceled.
Edit: I can’t believe I forgot BYU-Jerusalem, but I believe that actually is part of BYU in Provo.
This site will tell you cost per credit based on country for BYU pathways
I did Ghana and it was $4.75 per credit, and here is a brief article from a notre dame professor about byu pathways
Jesus Christ BYU is loaded!
Having visited the Polynesian Center during my years in Hawaii, I must confess that it is ONE HELL of a great tourist attraction!
Indeed. The Polynesian cultural center is 100x better at providing history and story than any Luau ever could. There is a reason why it is highly recommended to skip a Luau in favor of the PCC if you ever plan on going to Oahu.
Last I talked to David Bunce he was coaching in Willis, but like I said that has been a few years ago.
The Bunces were our neighbors many years ago in Conroe. Great family!
One of my high school classmates played for BYU-Hawaii in the late 80’s. When he first came back to Houston after college we laughed one day when he said he hadn’t see winter in 4yrs.
I’ve lived in Houston for 75 years, and there have been many times when I did not see “winter” for four or more years. My def of winter is serious freeze/snow. Just having to wear a coat because it’s cold is not “winter” . . . . . IMHO
Having lived in Houston and Hawaii, I promise you, it’s not the same.
Basically 12 months of what we would call a Houston late Spring.
Winter occurs when temperatures fall below 70F if you live in the Valley.
If I can’t wear shorts it’s winter to me and I’m too far North.
As a golfer in Michigan, we have what we call Michigan golf attire. 50’s, upper 40’s if it’s sunny and no wind, is a sweatshirt and shorts.
As you know BYU is very active in the Pacific Islands including New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga etc…
I should add that it makes no sense that we do not have a “task force” to recruit Samoa, New Zealand and Tonga. Great countries for Rugby. I believe the Phily Eagles have a couple of “monsters” from there.
I am biased with Mr. Oceanside Junior Seau but facts are BYU has done an amazing job recruiting Pacific Islanders. Yes the LDS is prominent there but if you do not ask you do not get. Mr. Hey Buddy Junior Seau would tell you first hand that UH and tons of programs are missing out on recruiting these areas. Oceanside historically has had a strong Samoan community. USC greatly benefited from it.
