November 12, 1979, UH QB Delrick Brown was on the cover. Delrick’s twin brother Elrick also played on the team. Arguably the best UH football team in UH history. Ended up 11-1, won the Cotton Bowl against Nebraska and finished 5th in the final AP Poll.
I dated a Cougar Doll back then and she gave me a used jersey Delrick played in. Washed, of course.
We beat Nebraska that yr in the cotton bowl
No doubt had we not lost to Whorn at home we probably win the national title that year…
The final answer to the question on the cover turned out to be Alabama as they pounded Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, Bear Bryant’s last title.
Humble brag, well played
That year I worked for Mothers Cookies in Conroe but came into Houston frequently to reload my truck and of course I went to many UH football practices and gave several players extra cookies lol.
Well, since I did not work for a newspaper at the time, I did not ask SID and friend Ted Nance for tickets to the Texas game.
One afternoon as I was fixing to head back to Conroe Hosea Taylor came up to the truck and of course I gave him a couple of packs of his favorite cookies.
As I went to get back on to the truck he asked me if I was going to be at the big game but I said no because it was sold out.
He gave me two tickets for the SRO game.
Big Hosea remains one of my favorite Coogs ever…
If a Longhorn saw you at the time giving free cookies to players, we would have gone on probation immediately. Lol.
DL Hosea Taylor is still one of the highest rated defensive recruits UH has ever signed, along with David Hodge. Unfortunately, Taylor’s and Hodge’s time predates the ratings services. I can tell you Taylor was #1 in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football the year he came out of Longview HS.
I can’t believe that 1979 defense had DLs Taylor and Leonard Mitchell, and LB David Hodge. All drafted in the NFL.
How did she obtain the jersey?
He gave it to her after a game. I still have it.
…CBY used to say David Hodge would knock you into next week if he hit you ! Dude was a terror !

I have a bunch of Astros baseball cards that were made by Mother’s Cookies. They gave them away at a lot of the games back in the 80’s at the Astrodome.
Not to play “old guy nostaglia”, but David Hodge is certainly the highest rated LB since the early 1970s, and maybe the highest rated defensive players. The only other contenders would be Hosea Taylor, Mack Mitchell and Ed Oliver.
Glenn, I was at practice one day and you could tell the players were dragging a bit. A runner ran up the middle and two linebackers failed to tackle him.
Coach came unglued and immediately turned around and hollered for Hodge, who was taking a rest.
“Son get out there and show those people how to tackle.”
Hodge non chalantly put his helmet on, trotted on the field and immediately smashed the runner…into next week, and then immediately ran back to the sidelines to rest.
We have been blessed to have witnessed such talent for sure. One of my all time favorites was a linebacker as well Eugene the hitting machine Lockhart! Great college and NFL player back in the day!

A couple of other UH LBs that come to mind. Greg Brezina, whose brothers also played at UH, played 12 NFL seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. Lamar Lathon, who moved down the street to play for the Houston Oilers.
You knew her, or you KNEW her?
I only knew her but looking back I think there were signs she wanted me to KNOW her. 
What I remember about her also was that she graduated from Galena Park HS.
