Hey CougarJim1974 - with respect to college head coaches and their recruiting efforts, my brother called me this afternoon from his ranch outside Fayetteville TX to tell me that this week’s Fayette County Record has a picture of Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer walking into a classroom at LaGrange H.S. in order to visit with J.K. Dobbins, their top RB recruit.
Oh the HC’s definitely recruit. But in most cases they are the “closers.” By NCAA rules the assts are allowed more time on the road. Once the HC makes a visit to a prospect the asst’s have already vetted him out so it’s very important to have great assts who know Texas. That’s all I’m saying.
My dream scenario is hiring Les Miles while retaining both Applewhite and Orlando as OC and DC. What better better way to spend the $2.5 million buyout than retaining the coordinators? Give them both an addition $425,000 per year to stay on. Major would benefit the most from great offensive output, as we know Miles wouldn’t get the credit. Then Major would really be a prime HC candidate.
That would be ideal, but I think Orlando is gone if he doesn’t land the HC job.
It’s hard to think of any other play while deciding between going to LSU and UT, amirite?
Then what did Applewhite do?
I had met Herman, Orlando, Applewhite and the other assistants and the various 46ers events held throughout the year…
I just KNEW that he was going to do well in the interviews.
You can’t play that game. Can’t say Major made all the good calls and Tom made all the bad. We will find out next season for sure.
He called the game Herman wanted. That would include numerous dive plays. When he called them was probably more on Applewhite. Herman said he called a great game after one this season; I can’t recall which. But plays are not called just for how many yards they’ll get that down. They set up other plays, they are used to offset defensive strategies (blitz, man coverage, and so on.), etc. I watched the replay of the Louisville game, and they showed how Applewhite was calling one play to set up another that went for some 20 yards. He’s a very competent offensive coordinator, but he’s not John Jenkins. He thinks defense and running the ball matter. So do I. Might notice we were 16th nationally in time of possession, which is pretty amazing given that we borrowed Katy High School’s offensive line this season. We were also 14th in 3rd down conversions. Last year we were 3rd. In addition, while we all rightly think Orlando is an outstanding DC, it’s interesting to note that we ranked higher in scoring offense than scoring defense both years MA and TO were coordinators, and there’s no question which side of the ball had more talent.
I WISH we had Katy’s OL this season.
