Possibly. I wouldn’t trust China to save my life. But they are recovering and shipping equipment, supplies and doctors to Italy to re-build their reputations for sitting on the virus and hiding the rest of the world from it. If we would had shut down flights to and from China sooner than we did by several weeks to a month our west coast would be far better off.
India curtailed their flights to China about the same time we did. They say pollution and close human to human spacing will spread this virus quickly. India is a much better incubator than Italy from those two measures. Not too many places more polluted on this planet than India and not many places more crowded with people. Although they are ranked 29th from a population density, they are #2 in terms of total population.
Probably there numbers aren’t accurate, but they don’t appear to be the hot spot as India, SK, Italy, Spain, France, and the USA areas of NYC, LA, SF, and Seattle. But they are warmer than most of the rest today.

If you pay close attention to flu season you can see that it is most volatile during the winter months when its dry and cool enough to sustain the virus. I’m not a scientist, nor do I pretend to understand epidemiology, but even our bodies have natural reactions to viruses to rid it from our system.
That reaction is to heat up the body, which would suggest why flu (and corona) is accompanied by fever. Researchers have also already seen positive results of applying heat to the virus. I don’t understand the humidity, but if scientific laws support it’s role in eradication, who am I to argue with such things?
St. Louis Federal Chair Warns of Uemployment Rate could hit 30% in 2nd quarter due to Coronavirus which should shake everyone to the bone. That is significantly worse than the low 20s experienced during 4 years of the Great Depression that it took 3 years to reach.
I found hope with this comment: “Everything is on the table,” Bullard said of the Fed, in terms of additional lending programs. “There is more that we can do if necessary,” he added. “There is probably much more in the months ahead depending on where Congress wants to go.”
“It is totally stupid to lose a major industry because of a virus. Why would you want to do that?” The House and Senate, however, remain at an impasse in negotiations on the fine details in an economic stimulus package that looks to be worth more than $2 trillion. The White House wanted to have a bill ready for a vote by Monday.
The new data, which includes infections between Feb. 12 and March 16, shows about half of 121 patients who were admitted to intensive care units were between 20 and 64 years old, as were nine of 44 patients who died – countering the narrative that the virus is relatively harmless for younger adults.
“They do have a risk of getting severe disease – it may be lower than the risk than in older individuals, but certainly it is there and real,” says Aubree Gordon, an associate professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the University of Michigan.
But I think his point is that the disease is frequently alleged to be very serious only for old people. When half of the people admitted in ICUs are not old, it refutes that point.
I don’t think anyone has said that. And still doesn’t refute the point. There’s probably 3 times as many people in the 20-64 age group than there are in the 65+ age group. Yet, they account for the most deaths and half of the ICU visits? Not sure how it refutes the point that the elderly are more susceptible. By a large factor.
Yes and thus will have a hit on workforce and that won’t do the economy much good either since a lot of people will be too sick to come to work and buy stuff.
Meaning when you talk about hospitals overflowing, you’re also talking about having fewer available employees and customers — in addition to all of the others problems of having a lot more people dying all of a sudden.
That’s true. However once Wuhan was shut down, all levels of govt (city, state, federal) should have started preparing. Until 3 weeks ago our federal govt was telling us there was nothing to worry about!
I don’t think people fully grasp what 30% unemployment will mean to our society. Nor do they grasp how quickly the economy is stalling. We have never seen this in our history.
I get calls from our church care team every couple of days to check on us elderly members. Funny because my wife is on the care team that makes meals for those who are sick. I have a hard time realizing that I am elderly, so they have to remind me.
I am a political agnostic, I loathe both sides of the aisle. But seeing the stimulus bill stalled in congress over infighting is on par with Nero fiddling.
I don’t remember anyone saying there was nothing to worry about. I remember we only found out about it in January and 3 weeks later the president closed the door to travel from China, for which he was called a racist xenophobe. I doubt he would have done so if he thought it was no big deal.
But the fact is, no president or politician can prevent pandemic deiseases. They never have and never will. But, I think our country is doing the best we can. We are a big country with a mobile populace used to complete freedom of movement. The things done thus far are more than I thought could have been done. This is a time to pull together and put politics aside.
You can blame anyone you like. Impeachment had nothing to do with this. Impeachment
My disgust at politics has reached a point that I am not even surprised when I read that senators were telling the public one thing and telling their wealthy donors something totally different. Or that senators were selling stock based on inside information. Or that advice and warnings and advice of intelligence agencies and healthcare experts was ignored.
Hiding behind impeachment and using that as an excuse for inaction is a pretty weak argument. Also Impeachment was over Feb 6, what’s the excuse for not doing anything after that? Impeachment was not preventing the president from ordering federal agencies to start preparing.
Heck the first reaction of the federal govt was to stop testing in Washington State! The virus does not discriminate by political affiliation. It was a total Charlie Fox of a reaction! There is not other way to dress this up.
We have to abate things like missed mortgage payments, not having energy money for food/medicine/utilities and that kind of thing. That’s where the focus should be.
