Probably because we knew what it was and had a stockpile of tests and vaccines to rely upon.
The media didn’t shut down Northern Italy, my guy.
and that changed the outcome how?
And Johnny if you do not think there are agendas going on here then I feel sorry that some only care about a political view / power and lose their sense of realism.
FACT is Italy has the oldest population in Europe and the most vulnerable to this virus and let their borders open to travelers from certain areas too long.
And they have been in bed with the China govt the last few years.
Lots of travel between those two countries.
It changed in that the curve was flattened, healthcare system capacity wasn’t overburdened and could handle the health emergency which reduced the fatality rate to be less than the seasonal flu.
There are lots of facts. You have to take them altogether to get context. Some very big facts are being ignored in this thread.
you need to ascertain how many people in the oldest age group had other conditions that made them more vulnerable to CV-19. In addition, the disease has burned itself out in China in 3 months with new cases becoming less and less. So the likelihood is we will see the same here. In addition there are already companies working on a vaccine .
The debate on this thread is being carried out in real time in Sweden and Denmark. Both have taken a different stance on this. Interesting read:
Fox new is also finally on board with the rest of the media then I guess. Even the president himself has become part of the conspiracy to torpedo his own presidency and chance of re-election.
It says a lot about the state of American society that we are willing to listen to and believe non-experts, while experts who have studied this kind of thing for years are treated as fear-mongers and part of some conspiracy to bring down the presidency.
The US CDC and FDA (as well as FAA) used to be the global gold standard in their respective fields for decades. Countries would just treat anything approved by US regulators as being as good as gold. Well all agencies have been deliberately gutted, taken over by the very companies they are supposed to regulate and are now shells of their former selves.
Personally I trust the experts. There is no conspiracy theory here. Nations arent going to shut down just because they want to undermine trumps presidency. Multi-billion dollar companies aren’t going to stop operations and tank the stock market just because their CEOs may hate the president.
As long as the media isn’t making stuff up, people should see through any bias.
I don’t think the media is making stuff up, particularly the numbers, rates of infection & death, age groups, hospital capacities and the fact that we don’t have a vaccine.
Ayeeee listen to your President.
what numbers are you saying are accurate JC, the 4% death rate or the 1.4%?
Knowing how old y’all are… I hope y’all ain T taking this quarantine lightly

@Coog51
Thanks man. I take it seriously but I think there are more gradual ways to deal with this than shuttering an economy. But the great thing about America is we can all agree to disagree.
Actually it hasnt been found “extremely effective”. There is some evidence from a very small French study (less than 30 people), which has not been repeated or peer reviewed that that it does work. There is no conspiracy to deprive people of the medicine. Studies are underway to determine if it really works.
It will take a few weeks before that can be confirmed. You can bet your bottom $ that the moment real scientists (not armchair Fox News experts in everything under the sun e.g. Hannity and Limbaugh etc) are convinced that it works. Even the researchers who carried out the initial study are not making any blanket claims, and have said that more testing is needed.
Fortunately (or unfortunately) there is a very large sample size to work with so they should know in just a few weeks. For a drug efficacy confirmation cycle, a few weeks is a blink of an eye.
Heres how the malaria drug story started. A blockchain investor named James Todaro that an 85-year-old malaria drug called chloroquine was a potential treatment and preventative against the disease caused by the new coronavirus. Todaro linked to a paper he’d cowritten, explaining the idea.
His tweet got a lot of likes and was picked up by tech publications and even Elon Musk. A claim was made that that the paper was written in consultation with Stanford Medical School, the University of Alabama at Birmingham medical school, and National Academy of Sciences researchers—none of which is exactly true. One of Todaro’s coauthors, a lawyer named Gregory Rigano, went on Fox News to talk about the concept.

Basically a lot more testing is need to confirm that the malaria drug is in fact a treatment for Covid19. I hope to God it is, but I’ll wait till the experts confirm it before singing Hallelujah!
BTW it is already being used in a Boston hospital (Drug that treats malaria being used by Boston doctors to treat COVID-19) ".… it appears to stem inflammation and may decrease the virus’ ability to reproduce.
Health experts were quick to point out more testing is needed to see how effective the drug could be.
The other treatment the FDA is looking at to treat coronavirus involves using blood from coronavirus survivors and concentrating it."
Choloroquinine does show promise as a possible treatment, but until it can be confirmed that it does work, it’ll remain just that a promising treatment. We know its safe for human consumption, we already we can skip several steps in confirmation process. That is a huge plus in its favor!
But what is your obvious answer?
I think there was some overreaction and improperly done steps, but it is what it is.
My biggest problem, by far, was not closing down the stock exchange. They knew the economy was going to go in the toilet. They knew that would cause a panic, yet they let the stocks plummet. Someone is going to make a lot of money off of this.
They need to reset the stock market back. The average person does not daily modify their retirement funds and just took a massive hit. It will eventually come back but there will be 5 to 10 years of lost growth. Governments messed up everyone’s business (with reasons), they need to take steps to protect the populations future responsible lives.
don’t sell what you own. Paper losses are just that unless you sell them. My paper loss is huge but my income from dividends and bonds is still in the black big time.
You should be looking in the mirror as you type that . . . and then take your lithium.
51 make some good points, I will add the flu kills about 37,000 every year.
The H1N1 virus killed 12,000 Americans. No NBA player or Hollywood actor
or NFL coach is going to die from this, but your parents and grandparents might.
The average age patient in Italy to die from this virus is 80 years old. Hand washing
and hand sanitizer if you can’t wash your hand will keep this down as well as decrease
the flu deaths this year.
Hope we flatten the curve before football.
