We make a lot of negative posts about UH attendance, rightfully so BTW, but for recruiting purposes, playing before a big crowd is not the main attraction to every recruit, and UH has a lot of pluses on it’s side. If playing before a big crowd in a college town appeals the most to a recruit, shake his hand, wish him well, and move on.
UH has a lot of selling points:
Fourth largest city, diversified, major industries, world class medical center, pro sports, great restaurants.
Winning UH program, good facilities, list of players who have gone to the NFL, and a chance to go to the CFP.
UH is still in catch-up mode financially, with its conference mates in the B12. We keep pointing that out, but the fact is, it will take years to make up the difference of being exiled for 25 years.
This crowd at Daikin rn, 20 minutes before scheduled game time, is abysmal. It’s definitely the city. We’re hoping to grow something in an attendance black hole, we don’t stand a chance in this city.
Correct. Once you come to accept that (I did 15 years ago) it makes games much less stressful. If ya wanna go, go. B!tching about what other Houstonians choose to do is a fools errand. It will drive you crazy if you let it.
I’m a convert. I won’t bltch about it, but I’ll definitely still ridicule some of the radical excuses, particularly “the opponent doesn’t move the needle enough for me to attend” crap.
MLB weekday afternoon playoff games, unless it is the ALCS, NLCS, or WS, are death. Fans, like me are: “I’ll wait until the next round for the evening game.”
Seems to me that some teams have multiple layers of local and national support whether at the pros or college level.
Teams like the Cowboys, Yankees, Lakers etc have layers of fans that they can pull support from through the good times and bad.
I have a coworker from NYC that would attend all the Yankees games here in Houston or Arlington since it is way cheaper than in NYC.
Even in the down years, he would buy the tickets regardless of how good or bad the team is doing.
This has been my theory for a while. This is a City of Houston problem, and not specifically a UH problem. And this goes for both not attending games when the team isn’t championship level contender AND arriving late/leaving early.
I’ve heard mixed reviews on Wrigley though. I’ve heard some say how awesome it is and how much character it has, and then I’ve heard others call it “a dump.”
Bingo. This also applies to the Braves. Particularly ones that grew up in the Maddox Glavine Smoltz era.
For the older older crowd, it was also the only team in “the south” (roughly sec country), so to speak. So some of that still lingers thru their kids etc.
Please stop ragging on Houston. The Astros drew over 3M fans just a few years ago. The years under Espada have been a joke. Yeah, attendance will be bad for the White Sox.
The Braves/Phillies game only drew 30,000 fans today in Atlanta and the Braves led their division all year!
Just as a random note, the current logo and color scheme is objectively really cool.
But I am partial to the last 2 iterations of colors/uniforms from their NL Central days because im a late 90s early 2000s kid who was a huge cubs fans.
Those teams were always loaded w/ offensive stars. Juiced up ones, probably. But i loved em! lol. So i kinda miss that look.
No. Please read the thread title. There’s too many here who made the case for all to see, I’m just agreeing. Facts are h3ll. It’s a MLB playoff game and it’s embarrassing
No joke, minute maid is arguably my favorite ballpark.
Id love to go to a game there, tho i admit all i really know about it is what i see on tv.

Part of the problem is Houston functions as roughly 12 separate communities, I live in Cypress and I go out of my way to not leave Cypress, I even try to avoid scheduling work appointments in Katy or the Woodlands, I am more likely to catch a minor league game in Corpus or Round Rock then I am driving to Sugarland, especially in the evening on a weekday.
The good thing about having a small fanbase like UH is cheaper tickets for bowl games, NCAA tournament games, neutral site games, and you can buy tickets the day of the game.
