Big 12 Basketball 2026-27

Why? Just another middling big 12 program to get crushed there!

I don’t think Rez meant that… he knows Mercy can hoop and isn’t just a shooter.

I think Mercy being “limited” on defense is overstated as well. I know Samps has mentioned it but he does that to push players imo and sometimes he overstates their limitations to get them to continue to focus on getting better in that area.

This is still largely theoretical.

Oh trust me, he dunked on our head top showtime style. I’ve also watched plenty of Coogs the last couple years, nearly every minute vs anyone remotely w/ a pulse.

And certainly more about Hadnot than it is Mercy. There is a general miliew around feelings toward him. I get it, JS.

Fortunately we can weight by 40 mins and 100 possessions. This is an eyeball test thing in addition to these interesting # comps.

Throw in the PGs too for good measure

Mostly focusing on assist and turnover rate per.

FTR, Hadnot reminds me a bit of Keshon Gilbert. He has a body type and body control he displays that is more funky and rare that lends itself to certain growth paths we see with other similarly shaped and skilled guards.

Miller reminds me a bit of Batemon, and I would prefer to say both are more traditionally built and just move more traditionally than I’d say they are “just shooters.”

But there is some of that by default. They’re built to shoot because their builds more readily lends itself to repeatable mechanics. That’s probably more accurate. So what, Nothing wrong with that. Certainly dont think they cant do other things well, but there is a curve there at this level.

Also FTR I think they can both defend, but everyone has physical tools that contextualize what that ultimately looks like.

Holy Flemdawg!!!

Best Frosh EVER at UH!!!

These stats say Mercy starts unless I’m missing something…

Basically, I think Hadnot is a bonafide winner ripe to seize the opportunity he has here. That’s what I see. Starter run maximizes the return individually and collectively.

Feel free to chalk it up to hot take Wednesday tho. But I’m gonna stand by this.

I hope you’re right… and I hope they are fighting for minutes.

Mercy showed me something last season… he showed me he got that dawg in him and he went and took those minutes from Harwell.

I don’t expect him to lose his spot as starter unless Hadnot is just lights out better…

I do agree with all of this, especially the last part.

In that regard, it’s certainly an aggressive bet I’m making, if you will. Not the 1st time, but i think i’m right here.

I agree. For Mercy to lose his spot, he would have to be bad. It would not be a situation where Mercy is nice, but Hadnot is better so he starts him. If Hadnot is balling off the bench and we are winning, why mess that up?

There’s plenty of examples where a bench player actually plays more minutes than some starters. Now I could see that happening. Hadnot could wind up playing more minutes…

But Mercy is most likely going to start unless he is bad.

For us Rocket fans…Kenny Smith/Sam Cassell
Kenny started, but depending on how the game was going…Sam could play more minutes, esp at the end.

ill start by saying, i love that you bring a different perspective … different perspectives add color to this place even if we dont agree

but im the exact opposite of you … mercy is the best path to greatness, and corey hadnot is a great 6th man spark plug

on why i dont want hadnot starting- he is probably way shorter than his listed height… {lol funny side note, i just search his listed height and UH already removed an inch from his listing}… hadnot is good on everything on offense, but isnt great at anything… not a dig but i dont think hadnot can score on top defenses if he is the vocal point of the defense … IMO his best role will be off the bench when teams arent focusing on him, and he takes over certain games… defense and rebounding were just okay, he lacks physicality but hustles

Why im a believer in mercy- mercy was efficient … mercy will not be hot from 3 start to finish, but he heavily drives. mercy is a dominant rebounder. mercy has the body to be a dominant phyiscal defender (even tho he isnt there yet)

efficiency- he was 54% efg% which is very good for a guard (top 15 among big 12 guards)… but the magic part was that he started the year off slow, if you remove the 1st 10 games, and just look at the remaining 27 games he was 57.4% which would have had him 6th in the league

minutes: i think mercyis being docked for him minutes last year… but last year team was just deep, houston only plays 5 guards a year…the benefit of every previous star guard is we only had 5 deserving minute guards … some years we only played for… last year we had 7, he was battling with a top 10 5star for the 6th spot … but on a per possession level, mercy was just as good as every previous star the year before they broke out

Size: Mercy is 6’4 and very muscular … mercy is a physical rebounder … when he isnt scoring he can likely still contribute as rebounder …potential defensive presence

Fluff that doesnt matter and means nothing but still makes me excited
mercys brother posted a clip of mercy hitting 25 of 29 3s, and captioned that mercy adjusted his shot this offseason to have a higher and quicker release

some clips from a college/pro run from last week
https://www.instagram.com/p/DclnbHYEhBl/?hl=en
mercy and acaden lewis (major star for miami/PG) did a bunch of drills challenge with a very well known trainer, mercy swept all of them
https://youtu.be/-ej6usdHoUM?si=Iz_3Wz7RIkpyCSu8.

none of those means anything… but still get me excited

overall i think hadnot has a higher floor from experience, but i think as team we have a way higher cieiling with mercy as the starter

Lil’ Romeo post! Now this is a day.

Those are awesome videos! He definitely has a body and his jumper is a well oiled machine.

If i was all the way a Houston fan, I’d be the #1 Mercy hype guy 110%. Totally get it, and I hope ya’ll are right even at my eventual expense, im sure lol.

Maybe after ISU gets relegated to the MAC, I can fully join the team and get in one the action!. I love fan favorites, and even if it’s not officially declared as such, I would definitely call Mercy that no matter what. It’s clear to me on the outside. Love when the stars align like that on the come up rather than the other way around. The ultimate fan experience.

This is the nicest thing pesik has ever said to anyone. Thanks man!

I agree with this…so why start both if they are similar? Wouldnt it make sense to have one come off the bench to guarantee you have a fresh one in the game at all times? Why start both and have both of them running around on D and they both get tired?

You have a good point about size and BYU may be hosed. We’ll see.

Kohler is probably only 6’9 as well by the way. Probably a natural 4.

This years RWIII > Last years RWIII
Kennard Davis was supposed to be 3 and D and was poor at both. I expect 4 to be better.

Kebba Keita regressed last season. I’d rather see Mboup than him.

Other spots Defense should be better. If rebounding is better it might be a much better team.

There were no shooters last year in a system designed to shoot the 3. Davis, Mrus, losing Saunders - it didn’t pan out as planned.

I think it’s a fair level headed assessment you have - and the size at center issue is real. but I’m willing to make an icon or signature bet for 3 or better with Kohler or 5th or better without lol.

you made it about height when i was talking about strength

kohler is heavy and can bang down low… kohler is almost 250lbs

mboup at 220lbs, he is getting eating up… especially in a true man to man defense

My money says Weaver closes out games at the start of the season. Samson goes with experience and Weaver has been there where everyone else will be learning at playing at power 4 level at home and on the road. By mid season we well truly know what we have to close out games with.
Going to be another extremely fun season.

Keita was super strong but it was about the height too. Obviously weight matters too. I think it’s a liability for BYU either way, just a question of how much.
