Add Boise St and BYU to the AAC
Boise and San Diego were already part of the Big East/American. They backed out before playing a game.
Woof. Boise’s coach needs to learn not to put stuff like that in publicly-accessible emails.
RE: the AAC, we need to add an odd number, and it doesn’t look like there’s any interest in Boise’s other sports. That means we’d probably need another football-only member and an all-sports member. That would put us at 14 for football and 12 for Basketball. BYU seems obvious as a FB-only add, but then who’s the All-Sports one?
Army isn’t leaving the Patriot League. Anyone in C-USA or the Sun Belt brings nothing, and we probably need another true Western team to ease travel issues anyway. SDSU non-revenue probably isn’t workable. Do we go UNM? CSU?
Oh brother, not this again.
I don’t mind staying at odd numbers. You don’t need divisions for a conference championship so 13 isn’t crazy to do. For basketball, I like the 20 game conference schedule which is completely balanced. With scheduling for football, each team can have 4 opponents they play every year and then rotate playing 4 of the other 8. This might be an incentive for BYU to select which teams they are guaranteed to play every year. If they really want a tough schedule they can play Boise, UH, UCF, Cincy every year as their 4.
Easier to answer is which year doesn’t Boise look to make a move?
I’d add Boise as football only and BYU as all-sports. So we’ll have to play some baseball and softball Saturday double-headers. BIG DEAL!!! LET’S DO IT!!!
Would adding Boise and BYU make us p6 by espn?
Boise St. must be angling for another sweetheart chunk of the TV deal from MWC.
Even at 13 in Football, we’d probably have divisions. They’d just be uneven, like how the MAC used to be for years. The issue is that it makes scheduling messy – teams necessarily have to have bye (or at least nonconference) weeks during every week of conference play. That’s not a huge deal for the teams that get them closer to midseason, but if you have a conference off-week in the last couple weeks of the season that means you’re probably going a long time without a bye when everyone else gets one.
so you want a 13 team conference?
I don’t think either side is really that interested in BYU being an all-sports member. Travel would be a nightmare, and most of their oly sports are pretty much fine in the WCC.
No worse than Boise.
Utah would make for a great fan ski trip!
no to Boise until they get rid of that da**d blue turf.
The AAC currently has 11 football schools, we can add 1, 3, or 5 not 2 or 4.
The AAC needs to look at Eastern and Central time zone colleges only.
That is where the population is.
If the AAC expands, it would select popular teams that draws lots of viewers like Boise State or BYU or teams in large metropolitans like San Diego. You can forget about all the other small town G5 schools.
Flights on SWA from HOU to BOI are as low as $169 each way, from HOU to SLC are as low as $133 each way. That’s not much different ($10 to $30) than from Philadelphia, Orlando, Charlotte, Baltimore, etc.
That may be where the population is, but what non P5 teams are left that would boost our conference that we would want to add?
UConn!
