Let the young man enjoy his recruitment. I’m honored that he committed to our university, but he’s a superstar recruit that is going to get NIL thrown at him to move elsewhere.
If he stays at UH, he’s going to do for UH what Lamar Jackson did for Louisville. He’s that special.
It’s not about that. Someone is going to throw serious money at this kid when all is said and done. Michigan just gave their QB recruit $10 million and Duke paid $6 million to get the Tulane QB to transfer. Maybe Tillman can make up for the Holgi disaster and pay Henderson.
People just need to realize that others with outside interests can say what they want, but its the kid and his family who make the final decision. And kids have lots of different reasons for choosing a school. If a kid makes a big connection with the coaches, players he might meet, and likes the school itself and what that school offers in the way of an education, and other things we wouldnt even think of. Our FB staff is doing good because they make that connection…Its idiotic to think Henderson hasnt already been offered a lot of money to commit to some schools. He ignored them, and chose Houston. Whatever we have set up for him is working fine.
In the interviews I have read and seen about Henderson, seems like he is quality person who has a good head on his shoulders. If he keeps performing on the field and repping UH, he will have more NIL opportunities in the City of Houston than he will know what to do with. His brand is a young, winning athlete, very affable, who wears a Davy Crockett coonskin hat. I had a Davy Crockett coonskin hat when I was young, and Abraham Lincoln was President. This young man is a marketer’s dream.
I hope the UH marketing hype machine is ready for Henderson. Even Case did not come in with this type of excitement.
I thought about him reclassifying and enrolling in August, but I quickly reminded myself that there is ZERO rush to get him here with Weigman, Zeon, McMickle, & Carlisle already on the roster. As far as him having another destination, I’ll say that every blueblood in the country wants Henderson, but that kid absolutely LOVES this city & he believes in Fritz & co. I’m not saying he wont flip, but it’s a good sign that he is very vocal about wanting to be at UH. He had “832” on the back of his helmet in the All American game & his shoes were as Houston as it gets. Don’t underestimate his feelings about being a P4 QB in his hometown.
That’s what I meant. We are still talking $2.5 million a year for a player that never played a down in college. If he gives us a hometown discount, we are still talking huge numbers.
Our basketball players are paid handsomely. Also, we don’t land most of the guys we just signed out of the portal without a significant amount of $NIL. Weigman alone probably costed us, at least, $1.5m for 2 years. That lines up with what the top 10 QBs in the portal are making:
#1 Carson Beck (Miami): 1 year, $4m #2 John Mateer (OU): ~2 years, $3m #3 Luke Kromenhoek (Miss. St.): >$800k #4 Fernando Mendoza (IU): 2 years, $2m #5 Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele (Cal): $660k #6 Maalik Murphy (Or. State): 1 year, $1.5m
#7Conner Weigman ???
#8 Miller Moss (Louisville): $915,000 #9 Darian Mensah (Duke): 2 years, $8m #10 Jackson Arnold (Auburn): ~ $1.9m/year
A. 5 starting caliber offensive linemen
B. Starting caliber TE, Luke McGary
C. (2) Day 1 starters at WR
D. (2) DTs; 1 starter, 1 *possible* starter
E. (2) LBs; open competition
F. (5) DBs; Keionte Scott a starter at the "Anchor" position.
G. A change of pace back w/ more yards rushing & receiving last year than our #1 RB AND #1 WR.
I say all that to say, whatever Eddie Nunez has been doing since he took over as AD is working. Do the math; there’s a significant uptick in our NIL contributions compared to recent history & this transfer portal class reflects that. The money is there, we just have to take the next step & start providing local businesses with an on-field product that will be marketable enough for those owners to see the possibility of a decent ROI from investing in our players. That’s where the large, individual deals will come from. Places like car dealerships, jewelry stores, oil & gas companies, restaurants, law firms, clothing lines, etc, are where those $1m+ NIL deals will come from.
