Now, it appears that we are odds on favorites to be added to the conference. Change of heart or was the conference coerced?

I think it was that article from Jon Wilner that said UH was the clear #1 choice for the PAC12 so if the Big12 did not select us, the PAC12 would select us later. I think the Big12 came to the realization that they may lose the Houston market to two other conferences and that they would have to recruit against UH as a P5 anyway.

I think that article was the Big reason the Big12 changed their minds about UH.
