I would gladly go there to watch you guys pummel some other team. Maybe i’ll make that a goal. You know we have the Conrad Hilton School of Hotel and Restaurant Management? We’re basically twins.

Somewhat anti-climatically, he’s not related to the famous Hilton family whatsoever.

Just a crusty ol’ academic lol.

His claim to fame was he took ISU from a small narrowly-focused technical college to an actual big time broadly-focused liberal arts university.

Fun fact, it was at a time when the university of iowa and most lawmakers were trying to kill us off by getting the State to allow them absorb us.

Sounds silly until you take into account that’s exactly what happened in our much bigger neighboring states in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Jimmy Hilton was like, “Nah, f*** that. The hoks can s**k it! We’re gonna do this on our own.” I like to pretend that’s a direct quote lol.

So there was successful precedent in our own region to make the university of iowa the only show in town. In the context of his time, James H. Hilton was actually a sneaky important dude that a lot of people don’t know about.

By force of will and indomitable vision, President Hilton paved the way for Iowa State to become what it is today… at a time when every force imaginable was actively working against that. There was actually little reason at the time to think it could work. Many people questioned if it was worth it to even try. An early analog of what ISU faces today… The original example of “Hilton Magic”, if you will.

So in that respect, it’s kinda cool we named our signature building after him, because he’d almost certainly be otherwise forgotten. And it makes the phrase “Hilton Magic” take on an even deeper significance than just winning basketball games. It’s a rallying cry that says ‘we won’t take a back seat to anybody, come what may, no matter what. Because Iowa Staters simply won’t allow it!’ Something cool to keep in mind next time you hear the phrase.

ISU might have the two most meaningfully named football and basketball venues in the country. Cool little stories behind both of them.

And trust me, ISU could use the payday by selling out lol. Most ppl assume Hilton was named after the hotel ppl and Jack Trice was just some rich dude lol. Couldn’t be further from the truth tho.

Would take that route to FF - did a Coog draw that one up?

If it weren’t for ESPN, Auburn, and any other SEC school ranked below them, wouldn’t get in.

Juz give up Paris’ phone #!

It’s a 68 team field. But if that’s the cutoff then we’re only getting 6 teams in and RIP to UCF, Baylor and TCU.

All I’m saying is ESPN’s influence is a negative no matter which way you cut it. I guess that is OK as long as the checks don’t bounce.

This is college basketball not football. ESPN’s influence is practically non-existent when it comes to who gets in the field on Selection Sunday.

Will the Big 12 get more than 6 teams in the Dance?

UCF seems on solid ground. Baylor is on the bubble. After that, things get iffy.

Current KenPom

7 Baylor 41 KenPom (BracketMatrix 11 seed)
8 UCF 43 (BracketMatrix 7 seed)
9 TCU 52 (BracketMatrix 8th team out)
10 Cincy 54
11 WVa 60
12 Okla St 66 (BracketMatrix 3rd team out)
13 Colo 79
14 Kan St 81
15 Arizona St 85
16 Utah 116

unless something historic happens we’re getting at least 7

after that i think we squeeze in 1 more but the top 4 or so is too good for us to get more than 8

If anyone is interested I did a statistical comparison of this years team and last years team after 18 games (courtesy of Torvik). The numbers in () is where they were ranked in that particular category and then I highlighted which team was better at that specific category in green:

Defense is materially behind last year, which is what you would expect with 3 freshmen in the rotation.

Even without the freshman issue last year’s team was insanely great. There is no Francis on this team so when JoJo off the court we dip a significant amount. In those numbers he has been off the court lots of minutes in nonconference with foul trouble. Then now add in the inexperience and we have what we have.

The good news is so far in conference you can see it getting better and hopefully it improves over next 8 weeks as well.
