We have the better backcourt. Jefferson is bettet than anything they have. MSU has us beat (possibly) in the true post game. They are probably deeper than us.

I like our starting 5 a LOT. Ideally, it would be nice to have a big who can play better post defense as well as one who had some offensive skills instead of Buchanan. At least Buchanan can run the floor, has a motor, and is effective on the offensive glass. My big gripe is he has BRE quality hands, something I didnt even think was possible.

I love Toure…hes a stud. He might not have the offensive ceiling of peak Gilbert or Jones, but hes a better/more versatile defender than Gilbert,.and an infinitely smarter player and etter defender than Jones. His compete level is more consistent than either: Jones was a space cadet defensively and disengaged as a rebounder while Keshon would bring his A game 20 percent of the time.

He is what he is. Not the most skilled guy, but i dont think anyone realistically expected that.

But he’s more athletic than even I had hoped. And now hes making all those garbage lunch pail rip away rebounds and loose ball grabs.

Without Jefferson, idk how effective he is. But WITH Jefferson he can be pretty darn effective with that game.

He’s also big and solid to be able to move like that is nice for how we play.

I agree hes an average post defender at best tho. Not really a rim protector. But he’s above average after AND before the fact.

The relavent comp, and its not the ideal comp, is DeAndre Kane.

Now there’s PLENTY that doesn’t match 1 for 1, so try to keep an open mind.

But just that hes a limited shooter that uses his phyiscal attributes and bball IQ to kind of make up for it to be effective as a scorer.

Yes, he’s more atheltic, probably has less true PG skills etc etc.

What I like the most about our team this year is the intelligence/ompete level. Jones was GREAT when hed go off, but he had several where hed score 15-20 and be responsible for 20-25. Gilbert could be outstanding or completely disengaged. Same with Jackson, who was insanely inconcsistent.

Toure and Buchanan are smarter, play harder, and bring consistency that we lacked last year. I loved Dwats, and feel Otz wowfully underutilized him, but Batemon is similar with a greater offensive repetoire.

I just wish we had a lengthy, rangy big that could play amazing helpside defense and block shots. Really wish we could have landed Thiam or someone like that.

Agree 100%. Much more mentally ready to bring it every day. In different ways, all 3 of those guys would have lapses

Why does it feel like the B12 does better against P5 teams than mid-majors?

Jackson was SOOO good @ Arizona. He was a threat in the post. He played engaged defense. He rebounded. He played within himself. And he did it on the road against a team with with a good, if not great, front court.

Sadly he only had 1 or 2 comparable games the rest of the the season. On a scale of 1 to 10, his give a spit meter was constantly a 2 or a 3. Not good enough.

Both an uncanny ability to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses to put the ball in the hoop consistently in “limited ways”

And straight up like give them a rack of balls both guys probably cant shoot the 3 to save their life. But when they get the rest of their game cooking and it’s time to bury a 3 to cap it off…ill be darned if that sucker isnt going in at an 80% clip!

Jefferson is the man… Buchanan is who we thought he is… hustle, IQ, knows his role…

That’s the Dishon Jackson game that comes to mind for me too as a positive.

But you know what? Otz still sat him a lot. Why? Cuz he knew he’d get lazy if you played him more than 20 mins a game, and 4 min stretches at a time

He needed breaks, more mentally than physically. And we needed him to be like a 33+ min big

Gillespie from Tennessee is a nice player…

Its the year of the small guard!

I agree tho.

And that was a mistake.

How can a guy, one that can be a key cog, ever learn to extend himself and build confidence if you dont do so when hes being effective abd earned that opportunity?

Quite frankly, Otz has had issues with that (at times). He did the same thing with Osun in Lawrence when KU couldnt stop him. Oddly enough, hia stamina seemed to get worse as the season progressed (always wondered if he had anemia issues).
