Cedric Lath 6’10 C - 2023 Red Shirting Freshman

I saw this video about Ced Lath in my YouTube feed

CKS talking about his recruitment.

Ced’s final 3 were: Houston, BYU, and Texas

He committed November 2022. And look at the other 2 schools now (BYU and Texas). Completely different coaching staffs.

Who knows maybe Ced, would be in the portal this off-season had he chosen BYU or Texas.

Today’s recruiting is just crazy like this guy:

Chris Johnson. 4 :star: recruit in 2023

*Originally committed to Kansas

*Decommits from KU. And commits to Texas

*Plays 1 year at Texas & transfers to Stephen F Austin

From the pinnacle of college basketball (Kansas) to now the mid major ranks (SFA)

One of my friends in coaching said he had a reputation for being a bit of a diva so I’m not shocked.

I know that I am not a future HOF coach, but I believe a player like Lath is not going to get better in practice. He needs in game experience. Lath was pretty raw, but as he played, he was improving in my opinion.

He’s got to earn playing time here. So for now, his best opportunity to improve is in practice. Battling j’wan, Javier and JojO.

I understand he has to earn his time. I just feel banging with our bigs isn’t getting him ready to bang with the bigger more physical bigs he will have to play against in Big 12 and NCAA tournament play.

It’s just my opinion, take it for what it’s worth (which isn’t a damn thang … lol).

Show me a team with 12 4 :star: and 5 :star: players and I will show you a team with 12 unhappy players that can’t stand the minutes they are getting.

You need developmental players who don’t take minutes from more experienced players who are willing to wait their turn.

Lath will always be recruited over. Because of multiple injuries and red shirts I would think this past season will be the only meaningful minutes Lath ever plays at UH

Hunter Dickinson will never forget Lath…

I think you’re wrong. It’s all guessing, but Sampson seemed pretty happy with what he got from Lath this year since he was expecting nothing.

My opinion is humble and irrelevant. Sometimes irresponsible. But, those practices are intense. For a guy who just started playing 3/4 years ago, he’s best opportunity to improve is to practice practice practice.

Kid will be a Force. Big, fast, strong. Has a strong motor. People will be pleasantly surprised at how much he’ll be improved.

“Raw” doesn’t mean “not talented”.

If fans expect Lath to be playing at a 5 :star: level by the time he leaves UH, they will be severely disappointed and IMO, unrealistic in their expectations. Sampson understands what he needs from Lath to be a contributor to the program and is working Lath’s butt off to get him there. By all accounts, Lath is coachable and working hard to improve. The criticism of Lath “taking up a roster spot”, misses the concept of having a team with players at varying levels of readiness. This is called roster management.

Who does Lath beat out next year for playing time?

He will always be recruited over, like Alley & Walker. That isn’t a knock against Lath, Alley, and Walker. That is the reality of a perennial top 5 basketball program that keeps getting better

The thought that UH is now a “perennial top 5 basketball program that keeps getting better”…seems a tad optimistic if not a wee bit delusional to me. I hope it continues…but I can foresee the possibility of storm clouds on the horizon.

The simple truth is that it’s the Sampson family that’s propping us up. And whenever CKS retires, it remains to be seen how well Kellen will do. As for me, I am cautiously optimistic.

CKS went to see him in HS, and tried to talk to him and give him some advice. Young Johnson shrugged him off. That ended UH’s recruitment of this guy…
