I know that I am not a future HOF coach, but I believe a player like Lath is not going to get better in practice. He needs in game experience. Lath was pretty raw, but as he played, he was improving in my opinion.
I understand he has to earn his time. I just feel banging with our bigs isn’t getting him ready to bang with the bigger more physical bigs he will have to play against in Big 12 and NCAA tournament play.
It’s just my opinion, take it for what it’s worth (which isn’t a damn thang … lol).
Lath will always be recruited over. Because of multiple injuries and red shirts I would think this past season will be the only meaningful minutes Lath ever plays at UH
My opinion is humble and irrelevant. Sometimes irresponsible. But, those practices are intense. For a guy who just started playing 3/4 years ago, he’s best opportunity to improve is to practice practice practice.
If fans expect Lath to be playing at a 5 level by the time he leaves UH, they will be severely disappointed and IMO, unrealistic in their expectations. Sampson understands what he needs from Lath to be a contributor to the program and is working Lath’s butt off to get him there. By all accounts, Lath is coachable and working hard to improve. The criticism of Lath “taking up a roster spot”, misses the concept of having a team with players at varying levels of readiness. This is called roster management.
Who does Lath beat out next year for playing time?
He will always be recruited over, like Alley & Walker. That isn’t a knock against Lath, Alley, and Walker. That is the reality of a perennial top 5 basketball program that keeps getting better
The thought that UH is now a “perennial top 5 basketball program that keeps getting better”…seems a tad optimistic if not a wee bit delusional to me. I hope it continues…but I can foresee the possibility of storm clouds on the horizon.
The simple truth is that it’s the Sampson family that’s propping us up. And whenever CKS retires, it remains to be seen how well Kellen will do. As for me, I am cautiously optimistic.
