Predetermined benefits to non champions just for being in a particular conference based strictly on hype isn’t sportsmanship.
If a 3 loss non champ Ohio State goes to CFP it should be based on merit (SOS, common opponents, etc) not cache or predestination just because they’re in the B1G.
Losses have always mattered in college football much more so than basketball March Madness or in the NFL.
This playoff scheme is silly. Even conference championship games are kind of goofy in my opinion. Just go back to the pre-BCS system and settle everything on January 1.
You can’t say that there is too much money to be made in the CFP, but then stop at 12
The CFP is a product that’s still trying to find its place in the world of sports, but once it does (when things finally stop changing), then it will become an incredibly lucrative product → which is why SEC/B1G want 16 teams
The problem they’re having is settling on a system that benefits their own conference respectively
I don’t want it to go the way of empty stadiums for bowl games like you see these days.
It is bad enough that conference championship games for football have trouble with attendance.
It is bad enough that a large number of 1st/2nd round games in the NCAA tournament are half filled even with good teams competing, this is what I want to avoid.
BIG is all by themselves with the 4-4-2-2-1 The other 3 power conferences and Notre Dame all endorse the 5-11. A decision has to be reached by DEC 10. Given how the other conferences are not likely to change their minds, i think BIG will get a lot of pressure to agree so we can start setting up future playoff stuff.
I’d say go with 5-11. I can’t see why the 4th place team in any conference should get an automatic shot at a national title. It just makes the regular season games less relevant.
It’s telling that if the sec goes to 9 and I heard the Acc also will , something is up. They are planning auto bids with it in mind, otherwise the sec stays at 8 and playoffs stay the same at 12.
I could be wrong in that strength of schedule is being done as a metric so maybe that is why
BIG commissioner has stated as a no go criteria that the SEC has an advantage in a 5+11 with only 8 conference games because their record can look better and have better chance to get the at larges. This takes away that argument. SEC will continue to push 5+11 from what this looks like to me and this move is to get BIG onboard who is the only P4 conference not publicly pushing 5+11. If this move can get BIG onboard then 5+11 will happen very soon.
I’ve stated 5+11 will leave the Big 12 with 1 team some years and is extremely subjective so I am not for it but it looks like that is where this is going sooner than later. Expect 10 of 16 teams in the 5+11 to be SEC or BIG on average.
