In the words of Ray Wylie Hubbard, Roscoe Plowboys just sounds nasty…pretty much is.

Keep em away from my daughters.

I really got a kick at HISD removing names from schools as well as mascots. It really showed the true ignorance of the board. Mirabeau Lamar was a genocidal maniac who killed more Indians in Texas than smallpox. He even murdered the peaceful ones. Yet, his name remains. Always thought it ironic that Lamar’s mascot was the Redskins since he hated them.

Their mascot is a Vok, a gear emblem which symbolizes a smaller part of a big machine. Ultimately, the Vok represents an essential gear that would not function without support from its integral whole therefore analogous to a vocational student entering society and the workforce. Sidney Lanier was one of the first vocational schools in the westside of San Antonio. The school’s most popular event, “The Chili Bowl,” an annual football game played yearly against its rival Fox Tech High School since 1932, was popular until Fox Tech closed. Although the term “Chili Bowl” has an underlying negative connotation with racist tint, the alumni adopted it nonetheless and reversed its negative effects by owning it. The district, however, announced in November 2009 that it would discontinue sports at Fox Tech as part of its plan to convert Fox Tech into a magnet school (football to be discontinued after the 2009-2010 year, and the remaining sports after two more years), thus ending the event after 2009. The Lanier Voks ended up winning the last game over the Buffaloes, 30 to 14. Afterwards both of the teams gathered in the center of Alamo Stadium, the place where this historic event was held, and took time to reflect on what this tradition meant to them, and how it felt to take part in this game. They joined in a chant, “Brothers!” and left after few photo-ops [2]

I was born in Texas City, but we moved away after 3rd grade, to the great suburb of Missouri City/Quail Valley. My Dad was in the Lion’s Club, and I remember him being an usher at the home football games. Go Stings!

Y’all know every post goes off topic at some point right? So let me start that now…

As a Texas boy living in Georgia, what’s the best online site to read about Texas high school football? Either by region or if any sites cover them all that would be great, though I know the state is probably too big for one site to cover every area? Thanks!

How could anyone here forget about the San Antonio Central Catholic “Buttons?”

I’m from Brownsville, TX. The mascot for my middle school was Red Ants. Never thought I’d see that in another school of any level.

This is no joke. A relative of mine grew up in SoCal and went to Eader High School. Yes, for many years, their school mascot was the beaver. You can’t make this up.

Isn’t that Oregon State’s mascot?

PC Police not limited to public schools…a few years back, St. John’s changed their decades long name from the “Rebels” (yes, stars and bars and all) to the “Mavericks”…
I understand the rationale, but it still ruins a lot of history…”Mavericks” doesn’t even have a ring to it…blah.

I said this was UIL only

Hockaday is/was an all girls school that the rich oil men from my small home town sent their daughters so they would not get mixed up with plough boys, roughnecks, and other undesirables.
