Extending before the player reaches free agency prevents other teams from bidding against you and driving up the price.
Toronto got a great deal. That contract is just over 50% of the Middle Class Exception (MLE). Gotta believe that he would have gotten more by waiting but maybe he really wanted to be in Toronto.
If he improves his efficiency to even league average, then he potentially cost himself a lot of money.
I would have preferred to see him bet on himself by waiting, but $8m is still $8m.
