Could Mercy Miller Have Saved the Day?

Let’s get out of the way that Coach does not like to play freshman, especially this early in the season, in a defensive game.

That out of the way I have this vision that Coach actually put Miller in to provide a spark offensively, and it was bombs away with Miller and Pettiford putting on a show in “who is the best freshman” and “can you top this”.

Too bad it was only a vision.

yeah and for every bucket mercy gives you he’s giving up 2 or 3 on the other end

He is not going to be a factor until Coach can trust him on the defensive end.

He started Jarace Walker game 1 so it isn’t he won’t play freshman. He won’t okay anyone in meaningful minutes until he trusts their defense. TA had second mistakes in defense and never came back in and is in year 3.

Mills, Hinton, Tramon, Tugler, Sharp, also played lots of minutes as freshman. Saying CKS doesn’t play freshman is ignorant. Maybe just maybe CKS has seen every practice and thinks Mercy isn’t ready to contribute just yet. Or maybe the message board coaches watch all the practices too and know better.

Yep. He’ll play when coach thinks he’s better than the guys in front of him. That time is coming, but it’s not going to speed up try to win game 2.

I think the way Cryer & Sharp shot it i don’t think Miller could of done worse. Jo even mentioned he is a guy who can create a shot on the roster. Plus Cryer wasnt that good of a defender last year and still started.

I don’t trust Cryer with game ball. He gets too crazy and ends up just jacking some crazy shot. :grimacing:

We don’t know but let’s not overthink this with Mercy or Lath. This was anyone’s game and they just happened to win. I will expect the same if we meet again next time and hopefully we are luckier like they were this time and also more importantly get better referees.

The defense was bad they could not stop their big man inside or the freshman guard. End of story

They missed our 1 and 1 in the first half. I think twice too. IIRC, Auburn had 8 or 9 team fouls.

You’re right. I thought that was the case during the game, and I just checked play by play on ESPN. UH wasn’t awarded FTs after Auburn’s 7th foul in first half.

Great crew.

It was an offensive foul. You don’t get free throws for an offensive foul.

No. Offense was not our issue on Saturday. We gave up 46 points in the second half. We only gave up 46 in a half once all year last year (A&M in the NCAAT). We couldn’t stop Pettiford or the screen and roll to Broome at all, and Mercy doesn’t help with that.

This is not true….hyperbole.

The defense in the second half was below par for UH….everyone could have played better.

But sure let’s act as though you know what you’re talking about.

Are you at practice?

Other than a couple of trips in an exhibition you have zero proof….he did fine against Jackson St.

None of us know unless you are a coach at UH why Mercy didn’t play….
If you want to insinuate his defense may not be up to snuff yet, that’s fine.

But don’t crap on a kid like you did, especially a freshman that you have barely seen play.

Well said Hill.

Currently, there’s a nine-man rotation. Currently, Mercy is not in the mine-man rotation.

lol what… what did I do to “crap” on Mercy :sob:

My statement is not a hyperbole… People in the game threads were wanting to see Mercy vs Pettiford. Do you think Mercy would’ve done better than Sharp? Mercy is not a great defender. He’s not even really not good yet. Emphasis on yet. He will be a really good defender one day. But he’s just a freshman. Freshman are never good defenders. Tramon wasn’t as a freshman and even Jarace wasn’t that great of a defender in my eyes (he fit our system but was slow rotating on defense).

One plus Mercy has right now is he is actually not doing badly on rotations. Kellen mentioned before the biggest thing they have to drill into new player’s heads is it’s ok to be super far on the weak side man in our defensive system. You can see right here Mercy is exactly where the staff want him with his man in the corner.

Mercy wants to be good at defense. And he will be he has the tools to succeed. But he’s not ready for that level of competition yesterday. That was a top 5 matchup. Mercy was getting taken off the dribble vs Jackson State. Pettiford or any of Auburn’s guards would’ve abused him.

But I would’ve liked to see Mercy appear at least in the first half to see what he could’ve done…Especially since Sampson emphasized pre-game that this game would be a great learning experience win or lose.

And I thought it was obvious… I was at practice the other day…

Lol isn’t the point of a message board for fans to talk about their team. How many people on here do you know that actually have insider information and go to practice lol.

They had those TWO banked in 3s, too…

We still should’ve won…
