Did the CFP save ESPN’s bacon?

Prior to the playoffs they seemed to be laying everyone off. The CFP has been a huge success…and they own it. And rather quickly, they are expanding it.
Is this the thing that saved espn? Because they overpaid for a lot of contracts that they could not meet their financial obligations on.

It may help their bottom line but with the continued changes in media, don’t be surprised if there are more layoffs in the future and such. I wouldn’t say this saved ESPN, but I guess I didn’t think ESPN was ever in trouble either.

As of lately, the SEC and Paul Finebaum has been threatening the CFP. If the CFP doesn’t show preference to the SEC, they will pay.

I assume the CFP will now give the SEC what they want even though they do not deserve it.

From what I understand ESPN is still in pretty hot water financially. Their bigger issue is that cable subscription numbers keep dropping. Their new streaming service is probably their best chance at fixing that, but we’ll see how it goes.

Given ESPN owns and operates the CFP it’s just ESPN tipping their hand.

It probably isn’t enough to save ESPN long term. I don’t think ESPN really understands what their problem is.

But the CFP is the best thing to happen to college football in a long time.
