the old tax debate. I feel its like picking which misery would you prefer property tax or sales tax. I lean towards sales b/c most likely a lot of basic stuff would be excluded and then you could pick if you want to buy that TV. While property tax you would pay until you cannot afford it anymore and have to move. Of coarse property tax is the misery we know but sales would be the misery we don’t know.

Property tax is a regressive tax that hurts the poor thru rents and less chance of home ownership. So I like the idea that this one candidate is proposing. Abbott will prob get re-elected so.

Both are regressive taxes. One issue you could create with a super high sales tax rate is people deciding to not buy things because of it. You help one thing and hurt another. No easy answers here.

We know how NOT to handle taxes. The way NY, Calif., NJ and Ill. do it.

As long we don’t turn into West Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama or Mississippi.

The sales tax vs high prop taxes could be a great thing. You’d have a state with no income or property taxes then they tweak the sales tax to make it fair for the poor. Buying houses would be easier for the poor and rents could go down bc you’d have landlords reducing rents to get tenants as an adv even if all don’t. Sales tax is more controllable in that just don’t buy if this month is bad. People would be moving here more crazy than now, cheap houses and no income tax with control on how much they spend. Food and other things would be exempt so it could work. They could tweak it some saying gradually property taxes go down as they up the sales tax to see how it goes so we don’t end up with a budget short fall. It can be gradual in reducing property taxes but something has to give bc property taxes here are too high. La has a mix of income taxes and property taxes and it allows people to keep houses and only pay income tax if working. Prob with property taxes is it’s there regardless and never ends and at the higher level forces people out of houses or makes it tough to buy a house.

They could get rid of property taxes comply and replace with a 3% tax on goods and services. But that will never happen because city, county and schools would lose their power to raise $ for their pet projects

Johnny if you are to argue taxes…it’s simply a losing proposition…on top of the ridiculous run states(see link) That tax the crap out of the people and then pi$$ it away that Mr Purdue pointed out…the Liberals want a freakin wealth tax…money you’ve already been taxed on as well as Ridiculous inheritance taxes and capital gains taxes that all discouraged investment…Don’t misunderstand…I’m for paying my fair share of taxes…just not ridiculous tax policies that slow the economy…

There is no accountability on how tax dollars are spent. And no repercussions if spent foolishly. Term limits would be a good start.

Thanks Coogs2u. Just watch the progressives start pushing for a wealth tax as their next move.
BTW it is Perdue-the chicken branch (I wish) vs the university branch. No problem. Common error.

Sorry…I knew that…I just muffed it:rofl::rofl:

And open market health insurance.

We could have a very good discussion on taxes. I’m not married to any one hard core stance.

The things that drives me are these:

  1. Paying taxes shouldn’t be overly painful for anyone. More attention should be given to how much someone gets to keep instead of only how much one has to pay.

  2. Someone making $400B should pay a higher rate than someone making $400K. Going up say an additional .1% per every million over that shouldn’t be that painful for anybody.

  3. Loopholes should benefit society as a whole rather than just who’s getting it.

  4. Unhealthy consumption should be taxed more (sugar, fat, alcohol, tobacco, etc.). A healthy society benefits everything and saves money spent on healthcare maybe. Marijuana isn’t unhealthy and could be taxed if it were legal in this state as casinos should be.

  5. Fossil fuels should lose their subsidies and be taxed just a little bit more if we want to get serious about conservation and what kind of environment we’re leaving behind.

As long as people keep demanding more from their government and electing representatives to give it to them, the taxes will increase to pay for those things. There is nothing free, someone pays for it: with government services, that cost falls on the taxpayers.

Or the government just prints more money and as a result inflation rises.

Regardless the taxpayers pay more sales taxes on increased costs. Nothing is free. Without the taxes to cover the money it becomes worthless. Look at Venezuela, their money is worthless due to rampant inflation.
