One thing to look for is that it will be his third OC.
I hope I am wrong, but until I see otherwise, UH just does not have the overall talent to allow its QB to perform at a first round level. That being said, plenty of QBs have been taken in the NFL, who had mediocre statistics but project well. Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Anthony Richardson come to mind. Smith’s physical size alone will get him noticed.
HCWF motto is attention to details. I am assuming again assuming that we will play a high percentage offense. Having giants TE’s is going to work great for Donovan. Keeping possession is HCWF goal. Donovan is perfect for it.
Yes he said we will run a pro style offense
I worry a little about that.
Remember Kim Helton?
We tend to do better with gimmicky offenses (Veer, Run and Shoot, or Air Raid).
Donovan just needs to be more consistent. Not consistently bad though…
Part of the reason UH went to the veer and run and shoot offenses was because those offenses were based on deception and exploiting mismatches. UH did not recruit well enough to compete toe-to-toe with the blue bloods. Sometimes, adversity creates opportunity, which then creates innovation. Emory Bellard developed the wishbone for UT (he then became head coach at A&M), in part, based on UH’s veer.
UH did not invent the run and shoot offense. It was invented by Tiger Ellison and perfected by who most people associate it with it, Mouse Davis. It took Jack Pardee about 3/4 of a season to get the team to execute the run and shoot properly, but when he did, it was beautiful to watch.
And given his history we never will.
Without our probation(s) there is no telling how high we would have gone. Going 10-1 while on probation and with a limited roster I can only think National Championships for us.
madcowsu with the ncaa knew exactly what they were doing.
He told me a pro style offense.
You guys are really over selling that we are a run heavy team as if receivers and QBs cannot shine here. Tulane ran a lot because they were playing inferior level defenses with a couple of real stud RBs.
We will just be balanced and actually coach the running game.
Holgy also wanted running (too much) and our teams were ill equipped schematically to make it work.
Having tall to very tall TE’s is a major plus for this offense. A quick slant…and let’s hope we catch the ball.
We can go with a DINO
This opens all kinds of possibilities for Donovan.
HCWF is going surprise many.

Fritz Magic is really about to happen
The feel for the ceiling of this team completely changes if you say we have a first round QB at the helm.
All I care is that we play fundamental football with the fewest mistakes possible. You do this? You are in every single game. A quick slant, running play, an RPO and we have gained 10 yards. Let’s go back to basics but do basics effectively. Donovan has the arm to go vertical. I can’t wait.
Just looking back at last year. We played Okie State and Texas both tough. And those two played in the Big 12 championship game. We were up by two touchdowns on Okie State in the first half. They chipped away and got it to single digits by halftime.
I like our chances with a top 25 football coach leading the way.
That was Holgy game. We turned what should have been a 17 point lead at the half to a one score game. Tell you how much respect I had for our coach. I was on my way out at the stadium at the half already believing the game was lost and that was with the lead.
Who needs an effective running game… shut er dahn in the second half…
What if DS should injury was a nagging injury throughout last season, this season could be much better in many aspects.
