And many private colleges and universities are asking students to pay even higher amounts: more than $80,000 a year for tuition, fees, housing and meal plans.
The University of Chicago, for example, lists its tuition as $63,801 for the 2023-24 academic year. But students who live on-campus will end up paying about $89,000 a year after paying for books, room and board and mandatory fees, according to the school.
Similarly, Kenyon College lists its tuition for 2023-24 at $69,030 making it the most expensive private college in the country. But students at the Ohio school will pay closer to $84,000 a year in fees, room and board are added to their bills, Kenyon says.
Compare that to the costs of rent, utilities, gasoline, maintenance on your vehicle, and food in the Houston area.

Sure bro, sure. Even the article says its one of the reasons enrollment is declining.
Thing is we have 47k almost 50k students with 12k dorms (8k campus and 4K near campus) so I agree we can be the best of both worlds bc of the huge numbers we have. We have to remember Notre Dame has 9k total and a lot of traditional schools only have 28k total so we can afford to have commuters as long as we get the 12 k and growing in on campus ones. We can have both and be successful.
Lsu has about 37k
Ole miss about 25k
Kentucky 30k
Louisville has 23k
So the point is we only need to catch up some on traditional students but 12k living on or near UH is a great start.
I don’t think we have enough beds on campus to accommodate all freshmen as well as upper classmen.
U. of Arizona has 7500 beds on campus with enrollment of about 44,000.
The area is surrounded by privately owned High Rise dorms. Thousands of rooms. And by single family homes and apartment units.
Basically like a Village.
