the only reason is zero funds so I’m not sure what other answer/explanation you’re looking for on that.
If want to have shade, it needs to cover all of the 100 level seats instead of just the 300s.
Other wise the uppity people in club seats and 100s will also complain.
We do not want it to look like the Huskies.
This is one of the keys to building a great game day environment. Having pubs, restaurants, etc. as places to hang out before and after games would do wonders for the environment around campus.
I would love to know what happened to that plan as well. It was talked about years ago.
How would they make money in the summer months?
Plus it is 15 years too late as east downtown has all the nice bars and restaurants.
Just as you don’t build a church for Easter Sunday, you don’t build a Coogs-centric entertainment district for 6 FB games a year…and maybe a few BB games as well.
It would fail miserably…so no one would dare fund it.
[NOTE: Brings back memories of when we owned the Galvez Hotel with Dr. Cooley and we did fairly well during the summer months, but we lost our arse during the winter months. IIRC, our business interruption insurance claim for Hurricane Alicia (August 1983) may have been more profitable than our cash flow from operations might have been during our 8-10 month hurricane recovery/renovation efforts.]
Rice Village is supported by the rich neighborhoods surrounding it.
In doubt 3rd Ward residents would support the restaurants, bars, retail etc year round.
East downtown has the Rockets and Astros playing year round so it gets traffic all the time.
Bayou Music Center had an event tonight. I got chicken tender basket with fries, a drink, and candy for under $30. That would not happen going to UH sports. There are soo many entertainment options in Houston and UH has to do better in pricing concessions to create better value to attract more fans to games.
There are 49,000 students at UH, and around 10k living on campus. I don’t think business would be solely reliant on football and basketball games
There are food venues on campus for most of the on campus students and I think that most of the commuters may choose to go home after class rather than hang around the campus.
We’re talking about bars and restaurants in that little strip across the street from the stadium? You don’t think people in the third ward like to eat or drink? How do those current fast food joints in that same spot continue to stay in business? We’re not talking a full on rice village with retail stores, right?
Even just that shade at TDECU would be cause for celebration.
Do we really think shade and restrooms on the upper decks are going to sell out the stadium? Come on now. That’s a lot of money for probably not a substantial increase in consistent ticket sales.
Also, that strip across the street from stadium is fast food which seems to thrive in these areas. Are residents really going to regularly all of a sudden start buying drinks and more expensive bar and brew pub type food? I just don’t see how you can wipe out all those fast food joints and replace with sports bar type hangouts. Would I like to see more places like that to pre game? Absolutely. I suppose maybe having a mix would be ideal
Who said anything about sellouts? And, why wouldn’t the people in the area like restaurant food? lol You don’t think they eat restaurant food? And anyways, UH students as well fans would frequent that area too.
Just saying, adding the shade awning is probably very pricey and the current ticket sales wouldn’t justify that cost. But I don’t know all the specifics, just my speculation.
Of course they like restaurant food. But what I’m saying is there’s literally 6-7 fast food places in a row, some of them have been there for years that I can remember. They must be doing well. I don’t see the franchises just moving anytime soon because they have a good customer demographic with the local neighborhood and the university.
Honestly , maybe just one local university type pre game spot there would be cool. Maybe like a bigger and badder Cougar Den. The current one could be known as the original, smaller Den. I haven’t been to many college campuses, but I went with my uncle to Dixie Chicken at aTm. It was a pretty cool, bumpin pre game spot. Prob had good traffic year round
During the WVU game Frenchys had 20 or more cars in line.
No, but it could entice people to come back for another game.
But you said rice village only works because of the type of people there. It wouldn’t even be the same situation. And if there are restaurants there, people will park their cars and go eat, just as they would go through the drive thru. By way, I think there are a couple non fast food spots there too. I think if options are there, people will go there. @SavageCoog
There used to be a taco cabana by the stadium. It didn’t make it.
Not sure how the current place is doing.
I never ate at those places since I was a student.
I tried Frenchy’s once and that was it.
Even I don’t pregame or hangout at Rice Village every time we play at Rice.
I usually go to east downtown to hangout before UH/Rockets/Astros games.
That doesn’t meant it wouldn’t work for this current crop of students and Big12 fans.
