UH and Air Force made presentations today; UCONN is presenting tomorrow. It’s not known if CSU is presenting or if all of the schools will present. Supposedly, everything will be wrapped up this week.

I recently spoke at length with someone very knowledgeable about the dynamics within the Big 12 who gave me this valuable piece of advice regarding Big 12 expansion: Stop trying to apply logic to decisions that will ultimately be made primarily on the basis of hubris, arrogance and greed. Which pretty much sums up all of conference realignment.

As we all know, there really are only four candidates. The others have either been reported crossed off the list or shoulder be. The real candidates are Houston, BYU, Cincinnati and UConn.
Two showed Saturday why they belong in the Big 12. The other two made us wonder why the Big 12 would want them.
But Houston could also be a long-term play if Texas bolts the Big 12 when the conference’s grants of rights and TV contracts expire in 2024-25. Houston would provide a conference member in a key market.

“If it weren’t for geography, I think they would be in great shape [for inclusion], I do,” said Todd Turner, who was UConn AD from 1987-90. "I don’t think the status of their football program will be a big issue because they’ve been good before and they have the infrastructure in place with a good young coach [Bob Diaco]. They have invested in the sport. Their budget is very competitive, perhaps even better than some existing Big 12 schools.

I don’t know that we’ll ever know exactly what happened, or where Memphis was deemed to have fallen short. President David Rudd may know, but he’s not telling. I do agree that a clear-eyed assessment of strengths and weakness is critical.
