Clearly if you do not have to observe the holiday, then you have a choice. Just because “everyone else is” observing the holiday in a way different than you, doesn’t take away your choice.

Christmas is a Federal holiday. Tons of people go to church on Christmas as they observe. I don’t, and Christmas isn’t even a religious holiday for me. I absolutely choose how I spend that day, the Government doesn’t. Peer pressure doesn’t.

July 4th, I’m not required by the Government to put flags out on my house, buy fireworks, eat hot dogs or anything else. I could spend the day indoors watching cat videos on YouTube if I chose. The fact that “everyone else is” doing the things I mentioned doesn’t take away my choice.

Thanksgiving, I’m not required by the Government to go to the parade, eat turkey, wear a pilgrim hat, or anything else “everyone else is” doing. I have a choice.

You absolutely have a choice of what holidays to observe or not observe, how you will observe them or not observe them, and when you will observe them or not observe them. Completely free of governmental interference.

I think it boils down to “do you look in the mirror and like what you see? Are you a victim? No?” Then you shouldn’t give two s**ts about “them” (whomever that is) getting a holiday.

The internet has made the whole world a nosy neighbor, thinking their complaints are worth hearing.

They mostly aren’t. Mine included.

Yes, but we do not have choice on federal holidays, we are told these are what you have; if you wish something else; sorry; our govt, our rules; not the people’s govt as it was intended. The only solution is to get rid of all holidays, then we will have choice.

It actually is. That is a federal holiday assigned to everyone, there are many who would prefer to celebrate or honor another day. For instance, texas independence day was this week and I know there are plenty who have a love of texas deeper than their love for the country.
If we could eliminate govt holidays or have a number of federal days to use as they wish, all those texas loving people could have celbrated this week but no; Texas freedom and Texans choice was given no choice under the federal decree of what days it has told you you can have, very unlike a country supposedly founded on freedom. Why this still seems difficult, I don’t know.
End federal holidays and we all have choice !

Lots of words to try and deflect from your disparaging of Juneteenth.

Nobody is buying this fake outrage argument on federal observed holidays.
In fact it just makes it worse.

as a third generation veteran, i am favoring veterans holidays over juneteenth and i do not deny it.
my solution as we cannot have unlimited holidays is to eliminate all of them. as for me being critical of juneteenth, that is folly. much thanks to the baseball bats i have taken here; i have looked up juneteenth celebrations in michigan. while it did not get recognized until 2006 in MI and seems to not have really gotten a movement in 2022; i am inclined to be part of it as it grows as blacks are the majority in detroit and not a minority like they and whites are in houston. i never said i would not and christmas doesn’t mean that much to me; i dont even put a tree up.

Juneteenth is for celebrating veterans of slavery.

So you’re finally partially agreeing that we absolutely have a choice in how, what and when we celebrate holidays.

The thing is, we still have a choice on federal holidays. There is no government requirement for private citizens or private employers (with the exception of government contractors) to observe any federal holiday. Private employers choose which of the federal holidays they will give off and which they will not. As I mentioned early in this thread, the average is that companies give 6-8 of the 11 federal holidays off. Companies can choose which holidays to grant their, and very likely their employees could choose to work anyways on those holidays granted.

So yes, this is a choice of “we the people” through choosing our employer (free market). Each employer chooses which holidays to grant or not grant, how much time off, etc. Granted some federal & state laws do have some requirements on time off but that is separate from federal or state holidays. Of course, some employment or union contracts can have enforcable holidays but that is again not governemental requirements but free market or collective bargaining priciples.

The bottom line, contrary to your belief, we do have a choice in what holidays we observe, how we observe them, and when we observe them. There is no government requirement on any individual about the holidays. You do not have to celebrate, observe, or even talk about Juneteenth if it so offends you - there is no requirement from the government to celebrate it.

There is no requirement to celebrate either. You still have a choice of how and when or even if you celebrate/observe either. If your employer only gives you off one of those days, that is a problem with your employer and a decision made by your employer - not a government mandate.

Eliminating all federal holidays wouldn’t change that. In fact, eliminating all federal holidays would technically mean that there is no such thing as Veteran’s Day. Veteran’s Day didn’t exist until 1919 when it was called Armistice Day.

Um, no. juneteenth is for celebrating the end of slavery provided by, veterans of the us army(union soldiers). Thanks for making me realize that, I have a reason to thank military evterans on juneteenth.

“So you’re finally partially agreeing that we absolutely have a choice in how, what and when we celebrate holidays.”

No, these are exactly my words that you quoted.

“Yes, but we do not have choice on federal holidays, we are told these are what you have; if you wish something else; sorry; our govt, our rules; not the people’s govt as it was intended.”

When all holidays are eliminated, we will have choice.

That was originally brought up in this thread two weeks ago.

Ok. But here’s what you said yes to.

Figure that out by yourself? Your constant blinders on Juneteenth are pretty amazing.

He finally figured out a way to make the holiday about white people and now he’s good with it. Now to just figure out how to solve MLK Jr Day.

I am sorry, I have no blinders on juneteenth. I have been beaten about the head with it in this post enough that I know it means very much to some posting here, as do veteran’s holidays do to me and the day of the ascension does to some christians. The solution, which was mine but I am willing to let us all have credit for it; is to eliminate allholidays; so that we are all free to celebrate whichever holiday we wish with our own personal time.

No, again; I am noting military veterans part in making it a possibility. It’s not about white people at all as over 180,000 blacks served in the union army, which was greater than the population of texas during the civil war. I want to thank you for allowing me to point that out despite your baiting.

The quickest way to prove that is to stop complaining about it as a holiday. You’ve eaten up much of this thread with the same thing said over and over, with flimsy justifications. We get it.

Still very obnoxious to pull the veteran card, even in regards to the actual act that Juneteenth celebrates.

Except that we already are free to celebrate whichever holiday we wish with our own personal time.
