Florida Book Bans

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with a parent deciding a certain book is not right for her child. There is a colossal problem with a parent deciding that, therefore, no child should be allowed to read that book.”

So true.

Legislating morality (at least in terms of adding new laws) is generally a bad idea. It’s also not freedom.

My wife who is an educator said “OK, parents find a book objectionable fine. Instead of banning a book a concerned parent puts their kid on a list that won’t allow that child to check out the book in question, but lets parents who don’t have an issue to allow their child to check out the book. Isn’t that real parental choice?”.

Yep.

Heck, when I was growing up, it was the kids who claimed that they did not want to read a book because it was immoral ,racist or some other BS excuse, when really, kids just did not want to read!! Now, the parents are doing the work for them. 21st century America people.

:joy:

It would be interesting to look at the parents who want books banned for whatever reason, and see what video games their kids play.

School boards have been politicized now. Many of the “parents” leading the charge to ban books do not even have kids who are actually in the school districts they are targeting.

It’s about culture wars. When you dig into any of that regard who is really being pushed back on, it’s usually not pretty.

Unfortunately, I don’t think this is a new phenomenon.
