You actually think they will bake a cake?
If you think people on SNAP wonât bake a cake, what makes you think they will cook something healthy if you ban them from buying a cake?
My mistake then. I thought that was the total SNAP figure.
I think a percentage will do nothing more than reheat or microwave. I doubt they were ever taught to cook unless you consider opening a package of ramen noodles cooking
No, thatâs my take. Of course feeding hungry people is important. I just think spending $9b on something non-essential like soda is a waste. Better uses for that money is all Iâm saying.
Fair enough.
I 100% agree with everything you said.
Tell us youâre racist without saying youâre racist.
This whole debate over soda is a distraction from the real problem. Keeping money out of Congress to prevent big companies from having influence of over policy is the issue. If Congress wasnât allowed to accept money from these big companies, there would be restrictions on selling products to American citizens that are known to be unhealthy and cause long-term problems like diabetes, cancer, autism, etc.
A lot of people donât even realize that many of the products being sold in stores are banned in other countries.Thatâs the real issue. Cutting SNAP benefits and making the poorest of the poor suffer from food shortages is not the answer. And we all know thatâs the goal here. Find an issue like banning sodas so the government can cut an additional $9 billion from SNAP.

Starting April 1, Texans using SNAP benefits â the Lone Star Card â will no longer be able to use those taxpayer-funded dollars to buy soda, candy, sugary drinks or energy drinks.
The change comes as Texas distributes roughly $7 billion a year in SNAP benefits statewide.
If the soft drinks are zero calorie versions, do we still allow the purchase ?
Seems the health argument goes out the window.
7 of the top 10 seems to be âhealthyâ choices.
How can you blame a soda for diabetes? Responsible soda drinkers seem to manage this fine. Hate to see government intervention on these basis. Whatâs next, health screenings to be allowed to buy a soda?
Thanks for posting. I was curious what a top 10 list would like. Iâm not surprised that soda is on there but I am surprised itâs #1. As a whole the list isnât that bad. Not surprised candy is on there but at least itâs at the bottom.
Was the restrictive legislation too broad? Its not going after just sodas. Lawsuits have been filed recently over similar restrictions.
SNAP recipients challenge food and drink restrictions in court
The âNâ in SNAP is Nutrition.
Government cheese is generally considered less nutritious than natural cheese due to its high sodium, fat, and processed nature.
High Fat & Sodium: The cheese is heavily processed and often cited as high in sodium and saturated fats, which can lead to health concerns.Nutritional Comparison: While it is a high-protein food, it is often viewed as a processed product containing excessive additives compared to natural cheese.Questionable Benefits: Some health studies suggest that despite dairy industry promotion, the heavy intake of such products is not optimal for health compared to other food sources.
Get rid of HFCS. Shiiteâs nasty. Both in how it is made and how your body digests it.
Yeah, thatâs the challenge with any limitations like this. The devil is in the details and the law of unintended consequences hasnât been repealed.
I donât have a problem with limiting cokes (meant in the most Texas sense) but writing the legislation for that can be tricky.
This thread in many ways fully illustrates how some posters will stop at nothing to make sure they align with some.
I wrote it earlier. This should not be ,never, ever about one side or the other.
You would think yes think that common sense should prevail but no if one side is against immediately posters identifying to that side will ALIGN themselves with that same party.
Boy was I wrong that I thought at least 90% would agree on this.
Truly mindboggling. These 20 dems should be applauded and those 55 repubs should be called out for this.
Breeding a potential 38 millions diabetics. Diabetics pharmaceutical companies must be licking (no pun intended) their lollipops.
Irony.
