How about Les Miles? As long as he doesn’t insist on bringing in Cam Cameron, he’s still a great coach and could use his LSU ties to get a leg up here.
Well, if we’re going to do this then my hands down vote is Phil Montgomery. First of all, he spend 4 years here at UH with Art Briles so he knows a lot about who we are. Boy would he be surprised at the change since 2007. But his real plus (with all due respect to Coach Herman and Major Applewhite) is that he runs Art Briles’ offense. That is probably the best offense in college football. Moreover it is a balanced offense which has a strong emphasis on the running game. Just witness what Tulsa did to UH this year. He is running Briles’ offense to perfection. Tulsa’s offense of almost kicked our butt. And they were as short-handed as were we. And that is no fluke. Add to that Montgomery has deep roots in Texas and if his tenure at Tulsa is any indication is a good if not great recruiter.
Now, I hope Herman can put the rumors to rest and stays here for a very long time. But UH fans, this one included, are still a bit skeptical based on past experience. If Herman were to leave Montgomery would be my choice. As far as taking coaches from within your own conference the way football has evolved since the BCS era there just don’t seem to be any rules anymore. Every team for itself it seems.
Not that I’m endorsing this kind of negative talk , but I think getting a good, solid head coach is more important than having Texas ties. The HC can hire assistants with Texas ties to help with recruiting. Notwithstanding what Herman has done, honestly, I would probably choose a proven G5 HC over a P5 coordinator. Just because someone was a good coordinator does not mean they will know how to be a good head coach (see Lane Kiffin).
On that note, I wouldn’t mind taking a look at some of the G5 programs that have had a lot of success in the past 5 years. The guys that have done a whole lot without much to work with.
Look no further than the UH-Tulsa game. With the offense they run that game is going to be a challenge every year. And truth is UH should always have the advantage in talent, but just as when he was at UH, Briles’ offense is a great equalizer. If only he had believed in defense.
I would get Willie Fritz at Tulane over Montgomery. That guy has taken absoluely no talent and gotten a respectable team on the field. He knows Houston recruiting like nobody’s business. He has head coach experience and has been successful.
This is the type of stuff that can drive a person crazy. We have a head coach. We have a damn good head coach. Yet we are already hiring a new coach in our fantasy land heads. As long as Herman is here, he is our coach. If he leaves let’s play this game, but otherwise I just don’t get it.
Coach Montgomery is my first choice. We can double his salary … bring him down here … we won’t miss a beat. CTH… you are forcing our hands to look for plan B.
Philip Montgomery? The Briles assistant who Uncle Dave had to fire for recruiting kids to Baylor from his UH office? The guy who forced the leftover coaches and players to essentially create an offense in the three weeks before the Texas Bowl against TCU?
Lane Kiffin, hands down. We are coaching for the now. We don’t need a lifer, we need a coach that wants to go somewhere better. Someone who will successfully build on to their resume. Having Briles, Sumlin and maybe Herman use our school should be a compliment to where our program has come to. Boise is on their 3rd successful coaching stint. No one stays for life, and if this is the final job that someone wants, this is the pinnacle of their aspirations, I really don’t want them (see Tony).
With that said, Lane did Tennessee dirty and USC did him dirty. But he didn’t do bad in hyper talented conferences. He can recruit, he can coach an offense that can all of a sudden (thanks for joining the 21st century Bama) utilizes a speedy non traditional quarterback.
He had 17 scholarships and a tarnished schools reputation at USC that they are still repairing from the Pete Carroll days.
I am a big believer in Fritz. That is who I originally wanted but Herman has worked out pretty great until recently. I have a co-worker who was Willie’s RB at SHSU and he told me that Willie was the best coach he played ball for. The team loved him.
