For UH sports all around, it has been a very good year

Two of the school’s biggest wins in the last five months have come off the field: locking up men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson to a long-term contract extension amid overtures from Arkansas, and enticing football coach Dana Holgorsen with the richest deal in school history to make the rare move from a Power Five job to the so-called Group of Five.

The winning has not stopped there.

As the 2018-19 athletic year comes to an end, the Cougars have claimed six team titles in the American Athletic Conference. Some are from sports that continued successful stretches (women’s swimming and diving, women’s golf, and men’s and women’s indoor and men’s outdoor track and field), with another coming from the resurgent men’s basketball program that won the league regular-season title and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the Phi Slama Jama days of the early 1980s.

“We’re in an extraordinary period in athletics at the University of Houston,” said Pezman, UH’s vice president for athletics.

The six team conference titles match last year’s total and are one shy of the school record the Cougars set in 1997-98 and 1999-2000 as a member of Conference USA. UH has won at least five team titles in three consecutive years, a school record.

Coog Athletics are in good shape but outside of men’s track there is still upside to all of the programs.
