Those USNews rankings are garbage’s garbage and I’m being generous.

They’re worse than preseason rankings. That’s how bad they are in my opinion.

Unless we’re talking about tech. Willing to give benefit of doubt on that one.

Do you have a source more credible than the USN&WR?

When the Big 12 consisted of 12 member schools, 7 of the 12 members were AAU - more than any other conference other than the B1G. Three of those currently hold membership in the Sec.

Iowa State and Nebraska both LOST their AAU statuses, so I wouldn’t count those.

But in any event, we have as many AAU members as the SEC.

AAU membership is irrelevant in realignment except to the B1G.

Doesn’t mean Jack to the SEC.

We added more AAU schools (4) than we lost to the SEC (3). Net gain of one.

Here’s a breakdown of why these alternatives might be more credible for some users:

Focuses on student outcomes, like future income and debt levels, rather than just inputs like test scores and acceptance rates, potentially offering a more realistic view of a college’s value.

A global ranking that emphasizes research and graduate program reputation, making it useful for students focused on academic rigor and research opportunities.

A highly respected global ranking, particularly known for its focus on research output and academic quality.

Rankings that include liberal arts colleges and emphasize resources, value-added, and career success.

My main issue with USN&WR criteria:
Graduation and retention rates (overall + 1st year + Pell grad rates) 26.5 - 31% of criteria

While there is a case for this, it also unfairly dings schools that have a commuter component. Research consistently indicates that commuter students, those living off-campus and commuting to school, are less likely to graduate than students who live on campus (residential students)

I don’t see the logic where a school with a commuter component provides a less quality education than one that doesn’t

That USN&WR considers something as subjective as reputation makes its rankings bogus.

We all know, when it comes to rankings

AAU status (and academic prestige more generally) matters a lot to the ACC, too, though it’s not strictly a requirement. Two of their newest three members explicitly chose to let their previous Power conference blow up rather than invite schools that were perceived as “beneath them,” and I suspect those voting patterns won’t change when the ACC decides to expand again. If they have teams leave before they expand again, new additions will have to get the approval of at least one of Stanford, Cal, Georgia Tech, and Duke, and I doubt any of those are overlooking a potential peer institution’s academic profile.

Only about half of ACC schools are AAU.

It was less than half before ND and Miami got elevated.

NOTHING like the B1G.

A handful of no votes are enough to block expansion, and two members have already blown up a conference over academics. The other fifteen members admitted them already knowing that, which means they’re probably aligned to that ideal, too, especially given that Stanford and Cal don’t bring much beyond academic prestige and Olympic sports.

They’re not gonna add a Memphis or a Boise or even a UH.

The ACC admitted them because they were desperate to add schools, having been convinced that several schools will bail on them if opportunity comes and they still want respectable numbers. No ACC school wants to blow up their own league. Some are unhappy with being with a TV deal that has 11 more years to go, but ESPN may be persuaded to amend that deal and help the ACC out a little. Time will tell.

SMU was R2 at the time of admission.

Those three teams were added because they were the only three who would agree to play for either nothing or next to nothing, and in turn block the biggest brands from dissolving the conference from within.

Academics weren’t involved.

Again, the only three conferences where AAU matters are the Ivy League, UAA, and B1G.

There is another thing, abject thing that the big10 is known for.
Should we start with:
pennentatiary state - sandusky
michigan state - doctor
michigan - doctor
ohio state
Surely I missed other big10 schools.
The conference known as the rape10. You can rape people in the big10 with no consequences coming to you.
