I think UH’s backcourt defense will determine the outcome of the game. Cryer’s D is big, with Wilson coming off the bench. Not sure Miller’s D is ready for this level.
He clearly has worked on his FT shooting and seems much more focused and comfortable at the FT line.
His overall offensive game has really picked up this year.
Yep, our perimeter defense will win or lose us the game tonight. Baylor unfortunately seems like our particular type of kryptonite, a team that volume shoots 3-pointers AND hits them at a very solid rate. They have 6 or 7 guys we can’t afford to be giving the kinds of wide open looks we have been giving teams the last few weeks.
Their two young stud guards are competent shooters from deep and on top of that they have multiple other guys who are essentially 3-point specialists that hover around 40% from 3. Omier is also the type of guy who shoots poorly against everyone else but is capable of knocking a few down against us because a) we are everyone’s super bowl in this conference, and b) how open we tend to choose to leave bad shooters.
Of course we “tend to leave bad shooters open”
There’s a difference between prioritizing defending good shooters and as a result not playing worse shooters as closely and what I see UH do a lot which is completely ignore the worse shooters. I’ve lost count how many times this season a sub-30% 3-point shooter has had his best game of the season from 3 because every look he got the closest defender was 5+ feet away from him. Same thing happened last year as well.
And it’s a reasonable strategy (the opponent’s best shooter/scorer almost always has his worst game of the season against us), but the bad shooters shooting well tends to be the side effect you live with.
It’s not that we leave them open on purpose… It’s when the double team trap gets passed out of and players have to transition out to guard that spot on the perimeter.
The monster giveth and taketh away… but giveth more.
8pm tip… I guess its nice being on ESPN proper but there’s a 2% chance I stay up for the full game
Damn it… I thought it was 8 EDT!!!
Probably an 8:10 tip and will start on ESPNNews due to UNC/Clemson at 6.
I guess I’m wrong and need to apologize. It just seems like he and Tugler are always in foul trouble. We need them on the court.
I am not going to go tonight, I haven’t completely recovered from COVID and don’t want to infect anyone. Plus I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck. I turned my tickets back into the ticket office for resale.
get well soon Mike
Florida is SEC and ESPN will push them as usual.
People are guarding him! DUH!
I know what you mean. Tugler has been particularly susceptible to dumb fouls, but I think Francis has made huge strides in that area despite the last game.
I’ve kind of accepted that we’re going to have someone in foul trouble almost every game. I have not accepted that it will happen in less than 4 minutes of playing time, though.
I think Tugler himself has gotten a hell of a lot better.
whats the feel for tonights game? I actually havnt watched much of Baylor at all this year
Going to be super competitive. Baylor has gotten healthy and is playing good ball right now. Will need a really good game from the guards to win. Because their guards are really good
Odds of a blowout either easy are pretty low.
Edgecombe is now back from injury. He’s a really athletic kid that can play defense. Hopefully we get some good guard play from Sharp tonight to help LJ.
TA needs to have a big game as well.
The matchup I’m most curious to see is Roberts and Omier. Hopefully Roberts has a better game against him than the last one he had when we lost to his Miami team in the tournament.
They just lost their starting center… wouldn’t call that healthy. I think we’re in a better spot with $harp returning and them losing Ojianwuna.
