Game 34: Arizona vs #2 Houston; Big XII Tournament (W 72-64)

mixed bag… think the top 4 sec teams + duke are better than us… don’t think we are a title team… but see atleast another elite 8, maybe F4 and think we are the comfortable 6th best team

What are your thoughts for this team, Pesik? By the way, you/ someone should forward that to Sampson and the team.

Excuse me sir. But for a horrid shooting game versus Villanova we were Final Four that year. We’ve been winning with cold shooting overall or with mainly one hot hand. We get 2 or more shooters in the groove NOW at the right time and we can take down anyone.

Maybe you weren’t paying attention to the OT loss to Auburn and then to Alabama WHEN Uzan was as out of synch on more than one way AT THE BEGINNING of the season.

And then there’s our D as I’ve heard. Othrr than posting on a fan site your basketball experience is … … …?

Be more detailed. One commentator said that. And it’s the one we shouldn’t ever really take seriously. The other 3 disagreed with him.

Goodman is a clown. He had Kansas winning the league and the national title easily in the preseason.

When I was in undergrad in 2015 I was the only student in the student section

We’re good enough to win the title and are underrated for how good we actually are.

This team has no real weaknesses. There are areas that could be improved, like rebounding, but it’s not a liability. creating offense vs elite defense could be even better, but again, not a major weakness. Uzan can carry, and everything on this team is either a super strength or at least good enough.

Oddly, this team reminds me of a better version of Virginia’s 2019 title team.

The real concerns are injuries—losing even one of Uzan, Jwan, or Cryer would be tough in an Elite Eight or later matchup. Foul trouble could also be an issue depending on the game. For example, against a tough defensive team, losing Uzan to foul trouble would be brutal.

Another minor concern is our struggles with end-of-half and end-of-game “last play”. I wouldn’t want any game to come down to the last shot. that hasn’t been a team strength

I genuinely believe we are the best team in the nation—and that’s not even considering the shock factor for teams that haven’t played us before, especially if we get a favorable bracket.

I’m weirdly not worried about the SEC 4 (in the context of final 4, and would be happy with a 1 pt win)…Auburn Bama barely beat us with uzan adjusting to us and in foul trouble…i don’t think Tennessee can score on us… florida our can defense slow them down, and they do have great perimeter defenders and insanely tall at the 4/5… but they do overhelp… while their season wide defense numbers are great, theyve given up 80+ in regulation like 7 times this season. their defense has some holes, i trust Sampson to find it

duke is interesting statistical they have no weakness, offense, defense is just amazing … they have scary positional size …every guard 6’6+, both starting bigs lottery picks for elite defense not even adding they have spacing… i get why any casual fan would love them over us… but, my counter for picking us… they barely played any top defenses, the few they have were run and gun teams, arizon/auburn… they haven’t seen anything like us, barely any bully ball… they are mostly underclass too used to weaker acc comp… i think we spook them… i think we’d win

Couldn’t disagree more. Duarte has always been at the forefront of spot-on Cougars coverage. I trust him more than anyone or anything else.

Really? I mean, REALLY???

go Coogs!

Duke’s good and Flagg, if healthy, is special. They would certainly be a handful. They’re probably a little better because of him, but not sure they would do it better, especially head to head. But they’re really the only team I think stands in our way right now.

Agree with your analysis on all the SEC teams. And I think playing Auburn (and certainly Alabama) again would be a little different now.

Interesting what you say about the foul trouble, though. I actually think that’s the key to it all for us – how the games are gonna get called and the crews/officials we draw. We’re fortunate we get to play in the Big XII in that the games are not officiated nearly as tight, given our aggressive style of play. However, if we get a crew that’s a little whistle happy, we’ll be in trouble in a random, single-elimination format. The fouls were certainly an issue against Alabama this season, and we literally escaped A&M by the skin of our teeth last year despite them. And when you’re also a group that doesn’t always do a great job getting to the line yourself, this is what scares me.

How we ‘match up’ against anyone else doesn’t. We can beat anyone else as I believe we have everything needed to win. The shooting and scoring metrics now makes us so potent and lethal, and we’ll easily be no worse than the second-best team in this tournament, and it’s really not all that close outside of Duke.

But we’ll still need our guys to win, and if we run into foul trouble along the way, oh man, that spooks me.

The injuries are part of the game, and can happen at any time. No team is immune, and there’s no way to ever gauge potential risk there or when they’ll hit. Our squad is reasonably healthy going in. I think J’Wan is gonna be fine. Sitting out the rest of the tournament should be a great reset for him (he could have played, according to Sampson), and as it turned out, was a brilliant call by the staff. It showed they knew something none of us did – that we could still win the Big XII Tournament without him. Plus, it also allowed us to showcase our guards and get that side of it locked in and going just in time for a tournament that is all about needing good guard play to win. Who knows how serious Arceneaux’s latest achilles concern is? But he’s really nothing more than a depth piece right now anyway. He’ll definitely be needed if we run into foul trouble, but I don’t really view him as a key cog otherwise. So, other than that, our health is fine.

I just worry about those other factors that could get in the way of guys being on the court.
