2024 Yards per play (updated 10/15)

What do the numbers on the parenthesis mean?

ISU seems to be in a class of their own.

If Houston can finish around tenth in the big 12 this year I think we can build on that going forward.

(national offensive YPP rank & yards gained per play, national defensive YPP rank & yards allowed per play)

For example: Houston is tied for 11th in the big 12 in adjusted yards per play, they are ranked 105th on offense gaining 4.8 yards per play, and they are ranked 24th nationally on defense giving up 4.8 yards per play. This results in an adjusted yards per play that is EVEN when you combine their not so good offense and their very good defense.

BYU is 2nd in the Big 12 in combined YPP. They are ranked 48th nationally on offense gaining 5.8 yards per play, and their defense is ranked 8th in the nation only allowing 4.3 yards per play. This means BYU averages a 1.5 yard advantage per snap in their games this year so far.

A negetive number is obviously bad. Like Kansas, houston’s opponent, averages a -0.3 yard disadvantage per play this year. Their 58th ranked offense is gaining 5.6, but their 86th ranked defense is allowing 5.9 per play.

That makes perfect sense. Thank you

As long as you’re hovering around even, you can win football games. But that’s where you are extremely reliant on things that are somtimes considered flukey or luck related
like field position, penalties, turnovers, kicking game etc.

I like to use these charts to make my bets. They give you a decent idea of how good a team is at moving the ball and stopping the ball, all things equal.

Comparison between teams is also impacted by the quality of the opponents.

No doubt. But i think it helps to start somewhere.

For example, by what metric are we using to judge “quality” of said opponents?

Its easy and common for comparisons to hinge on things like eyeball tests, circular reasoning, and entrenched biases.

Before the season? give me KU by double digits all day in Arrowhead.

Looking at this chart I’m taking the Coogs to cover hands down, probably to win outright. Might lose, but its the right bet. Fans can and should feel like this one is there for the taking.

Sure. ISU has the 5th best SOR though

I strongly feel that our Cougars will beat The Jayhawks.

Also believe that KSU, ISU, and BYU are the class of The Big 12. One of them will make the CFP. Maybe 2 of them will.

I think we (red coogs) win the next two

In terms of on campus/off campus venue, Kansas is a bit of an outlier in this regard. KU’s Memorial Stadium was by far the worst stadium in the Big 12 and a contender for worst in the P4. It had basically no ammenities and infrastructure to incentivize fans to want to show up. It had small sloped-back grandstands that are set very far back back because it used to have a track around it until not very long ago.

On the flipside, Arrowhead is pretty cool. The acoustics maximize whatever crowd is there, and it has a fantastic setup for tailgating. It’s an NFL stadium, so big upgrade in creature comforts to draw the casual fan (aka all KU football fans) over Memorial Stadium, which was literally falling apart.

The biggest factor here is the product on the field, which the hype train has certainly slowed down greatly compared to where Liepold had things less than a year ago. Kansas is the epitome of a basketball school, so I expect the environment and general fan enthusiasm to ebb and flow dramatically with how the team is playing, regardless of venue. Their stock is down down, and I guarantee you that many have already moved on to basketball season mentally. That’s the good news for the Coogs.

The bad news, or maybe more accurate to say possibly slightly concerning, is that Lawrence and KC are basically one in the same. I routinely travel to KC, Lawrence, and Manhattan to watch my Cyclones, and it is about the quickest and easiest drive you can imagine from KC to Lawrence to cover that distance. We just don’t have the traffic up here that you guys do down there, even on major interstates between population centers.

The Jayhawks also have a permanent presence in KC, as you might expect, and I’m sure a great deal of people make the trip regularly in the opposite direction when games are on campus (well, at least basketball).

KC is an NFL and college basketball town for sure, and KU is very obviously their college basketball team 100%. The question of how much of that extends to college football is debatable because KU football simply hasnt been good enough often enough to really answer that question. IMO, I think the appetite is there, but it’s fickle. I would be suprised to see Kansas show very well for itself in terms of home crowd advantage on Saturday.

Is it just me, or does the TCU game feel like a month ago? Ready to get this one started.

So we can go scoreless and guarantee a loss ? ? ? ? ?

Maybe because the kid is a better throwing quarterback? Don’t you have better things to do other than going around cutting down a good kid who may not be the answer at quarterback, but remains loyal to the team and ready to play?

Both Chriss and Smith need to be team players for this season to work. If you have one QB pouting, it affects the whole team. It says a lot that these QBs are such team players. I wish both of them much success this season.

I hope this isn’t an accurate statement.

Have they released the uniforms for the game?

UH uniforms vs Kansas:

  • Candy red helmet
  • White jersey
  • Red pants
