Solid Victory – Team is Finding Its Rhythm
A solid win, and you can see this team improving every game. Here are my key takeaways:
Offense – 14/20
I thought our offensive line responded well to the game plan. Execution was solid, though we still left the “door” open too often for Weigman to get hit.
What I loved most was how we exploited Buffalo’s inability to stop the run. Georgia Tech exposed Prime’s defense a few weeks ago, and Conner gave them a déjà vu nightmare. Tanner was used as a decoy for much of the game — and effectively.
I do think Colorado’s DC needs to take a long look in the mirror. You simply can’t allow that many yards against two Power Four opponents.
Our RB injuries had me worried going in, but the OC managed the rotation well and lightened the load on our depth chart. You could tell last week that our offense was purposely “hiding” some of its playbook. What we saw last night was the first glimpse of what’s coming.
This isn’t the Run and Shoot, but it’s also not the “boring” offense some fans accuse HCWF of running. This was smart, mismatch-driven football — and there’s a lot more we can do as the unit gels.
Conner keeps improving every game, and you can see how much fun he’s having out there. That energy is contagious for the whole team. I have no doubt we could have scored another 10 points if we wanted to, but HCWF knows the value of respecting opponents and keeping future matchups in mind. Fundamentals and focus are clearly the team’s mantra right now.
Defense – 14.5/20
Overall, a solid performance. I could have gone higher, but the second quarter raised some of the same questions we saw in the first two games. Staub wasn’t ready for prime time (pun intended), but he did find some holes in our secondary.
That said — we finally came up with some interceptions, which is huge for this defense’s confidence. Our DC clearly made some major adjustments ay half time. The Buff’s DC did not/could not and lost the chess game. The Cougar was on the prowl, and against a Buffalo with no horns, it wasn’t a fair fight.
Big Picture
The bye week comes at the perfect time. We need it — injuries are a major concern, and this roster is still in rebuilding mode. Let’s hope for quick recoveries across the board.
A quick note on Deion Sanders: love him or not, the man cares deeply about the game. That said, I’m not sure surrounding Colorado’s roster with countless Hall of Famers is the recipe they think it is. There’s almost a sense that their players thought this would be an “easy” win — and instead, they got slapped.
As for all the pundits who picked Colorado because they “have the better squad” — last night was a reminder that a live game is not a video game. Anything can happen, and we went out and earned respect.
Let’s build on it and keep worrying about ourselves.
How could I forget? Special shoutout to our Kicker. His impact was crucial to our victory.
