Geographic footprint of the American Athletic Conference

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your service. I have huge respect for USN sailors that served on ships. My daughter served 4 years aboard a destroyer out of San Diego and I was fortunate enough to sail with her on a Tiger Cruise from Pearl Harbor back to San Diego, CA. I was seasick the first 48 hours and barely made it out of the berthing area! Unfortunately, I was never stationed at the air force base outside of Istanbul. I went TDY to both Izmir and Adana Air Bases and visited Istanbul maybe 8-9 times (don’t remember the exact number). It ranks in the top five of my favorite cities around the globe (culture, history, architecture, scenery, street energy, food, etc.).

Based on your description of events during your visit, sounds like you had an exciting time as well. I enjoyed visiting Topaki Palace as well (sultans’ residence during the Ottoman Empire). Courtyard of the Eunuchs, the Imperial Harem, the courtyards, etc. I agree with you, those guys lived a charmed life.

Joe, your daughter got a good assignment. When we filled out our dream sheet of 3 choices of ships and 3 home ports, I listed a PGM in Saigon (smallest vessel with an FT), a destroyer escort out of Honolulu, and a destroyer out of San Diego. So naturally I got an aircraft carrier out of Norfolk.

And I thank you and your daughter for your service as well.

Our footprint is much larger than any of the P5s. Its made for TV and fans who can afford to fly.

Not good for building rivalries. Not good for student and young alumni travel.

I agree, but I still prefer playing Navy, Cincy, UCF, and Memphis over UTSA, UNT, Southern Miss, and the University of Louisiana Lafayette any day (for example).

So out of the three choices below, you would take the first two over the third.

Hang out with 500 UH fans at a venue 1000 miles away.
Watch the road game on TV.
Hang out with 5 to 10 thousand UH fans at a venue 4 hours away.

You bet. I’ll take the higher quality of competition any day, as well as the higher academic profile of the AAC members.
