Happy birthday Sweet Lou

The Globetrotters retired his jersey, and did the ceremony at the Fertita Center during a stint the Globetrotters had playing there. I kinda wish it was hung up on the wall somewhere in there, but I know space is limited.

The more I think about retiring Louis Dunbar’s number at Fertitta Center (number 22 for those of you scoring at home), the more I like it. Dunbar’s affiliation with the Harlem Globetrotters is not just Houston; its worldwide.

Suggestion: The retired basketball numbers at Fertitta Center are vertically rectangle.

Perhaps have the top half of the rectangle celebrate his UH number and the bottom half of the rectangle his Harlem Globetrotter number.

I think from a historical perspective, it is appropriate to honor a former UH player that was associated with such a worldwide entertainment brand as the Harlem Globetrotters.

Drexler also wore 22, and his jersey is retired.

Yes, thank you for the correction. I still like my idea as a tribute.

I have no idea what number he wore as a Globetrotter.

Me too. There must be a way to do it.

Gotta call Lauren Sampson. If anyone can find a way, it will be her.

One of my fondest memories at UH was having a PE class (basketball) with Lou in 1974. What a joy to be around him and that infectious smile. He was a walking/talking comedian, no surprise that he ended up in the Meadowlark role with the Globetrotters.

Not a fan of retiring numbers, honor the person’s name. How about unretiring numbers so younger players have the opportunity to wear the number of a UH legend.

Same applies to all sports.

They can ask to wear it…

Dunbar and I share the same Hometown.

I think there should be a Globetrotter jersey displayed somewhere along with a description of who they were and what he meant to that team and basketball at the time.
