“Magic” cant completely overcome rampant stupidity and bad basketball.
Ive been saying this for months, but ISU is NOT a good doubling/trapping team. Recognition (of when to trap) is poor, execution is poor (unecessarily bodying/fouling), and awarness (who needs to rotate) is pitiful. Texas Tech scored at least 20 points in the first half alone on wide open shots off bad doubles. If there is one team you dont want to leave open from deep its Tech. And it was done repeatedly.
The definition of insanity is expecting different results when the inputs remain unchanged. The doubles are a problem. Screen hedging is non-existent. Jefferson spending the majority of offensive possessions away from the post. Buchanan not fighting for position (at all) on the defenisve glass.
This has been a persistent issue during Otz’s tenure. Once fixable issues manifest they arent addressed. At first they are small, but over time the negative deviations become larger until they are fatal. Otz needs to do a much better job of identifying and making adjustments before things progress to that level. Sadly, if he hasnt figured it out now I doubt he ever will.
The “Cyclone fade” will likely be a permanent phenomenon.
