Astros would be wise to call Bregman’s bluff…the deal they’re reportedly offering is more than generous despite the years (4) being a little low. But 39 million AAV is still playing ball for a guy seeking a six-year, 200 million deal.
I can live with it if the money gets spent elsewhere but if we’re just being cheap then the team got worse. 21 million a year for YK is fair value and the contract length is fine. Angels probably wont use him right though so for them it’s probably an overspend.
Yeah, and it makes that trade look pretty bad. Even if none of the players traded would make the roster this year, they could have been better-leveraged.
They waaaaay overpaid….and there is no guarantee they get “Astros YK”.
Also have to consider this will be his 34,35 and 36 year old seasons……his stuff is not great….as soon as he loses a couple of ticks in velocity he is a 5+ ERA pitcher.
Pitchers age better than sluggers in my opinion. Not worried about his age and while I agree the Angels likely won’t get the Astros YK, I don’t hate the signing. We’ll see how it pans out. Like I say, I’m fine with the Stros not resigning him as long as we take that money and spend it elsewhere.
Has it occurred to you guys that Boras could have priced Bregman in a way that made him unaffordable to at least one team…the Astros.
I’m starting to think Bregman really didn’t want to stay in Houston but really didn’t want to come out and say it.
If Bergman ever performed for a full season, I’d worry a lot more about losing him. As it is, I’m kind of indifferent - great if he stays, OK if he goes.
I thought exactly this for a couple of years……then Altuve came out and said what he said….so I figured I was wrong….but yeah, you could be on to something.
