Houston Astros Baseball & MLB Discussions

No pain, no gain?

Astros didn’t play and gain a 1/2 game on the Mariners and Rangers.

And now he’s sitting so that Chas can play LF.

Why did the Astros even hire Espada? They could have hired someone from this board for $200k and gotten better results.

Am i reading correctly that Peña already has 7 errors? Bring back george bell and let him play short. Hell, Jose Canseco.

Jake is on some kind of tear, though.

So glad to see Meyers contributing in a major way. Bottom third of the lineup is looking strong for the Astros.

Yeah, the Astros are going to have to move some outfielders soon, I think, especially with Leon tearing up AAA pitching.

Mariners and Rangers both lose.

Astros with a good chance to gain ground.

A win places Astros 1/2 game behind Rangers and 3 1/2 behind Seattle.

Except Truman.

Looks like Urquidy may be done.

Left is SL start after 3.2 IP with Forearm tightness.

Verla creamed by Yankees but solid otherwise.
Abreau again giving up a run an inning. He and Press are trouble.

Just saw a list w Meyers All Star alternate right now.
W bad pitching coming up maybe.
Harrison Bader made one (St Louis) and they are similar.

Big Jon at least hitting bad pitching now.

Im into playing Chaz lots now only for that reason.
See what he has w 50+ ABs. Lopo looks good & sucks 2 sit him.

Oh My.

Solid rebound start for JV. Passed up Maddux in Ks. One win away from 260 now. Love to see it.

Rangers and Mariners keep losing. The Stros are are only 3.5 games out of 1st and only a half game out of second.

The Rangers are going through a stretch like the way the Astros started the season.

I told you chaps. He hasn’t looked good in two years. I wouldn’t even consider him and McCullers part of the team. They’re like the old, retired store managers that the employees let play in the yearly softball game.

He’s had 25 ABs in the minors, 22 at the Developmental League and 3 at Sugarland. He hit .318 in Florida with 2 double and a HR against kids and he’s 0-fer at Sugarland, but yeah I get it, that level of performance screams he’s ready to come back to the majors.

When he comes back how long is management going to let him suck up ABs before they admit that they lost the bet on him and negotiate a buy out or DFA him. There’s not a team in MLB that would pick Abreu up for any reason based on his performance. Offer him a Bonilla deal and move on.

Making Abreu your primary starter at 1b is not a commitment to winning baseball. If Espada really controls the lineup and he values his job, he’ll leave Abreu on the bench as he has 3 options at 1B that are better than Abreu:

Dubon
Loperfido
Singleton

The Abreu saga is starting to remind me of Maldonado last year. Speaking of Maldonado, the only player in MLB wit stats comparable to Abreu, he’s hitting .089/.139/.282 and he’s still starting 1/2 the time for the White Sox. Their fan media is starting to ask the same questions we were last year.

I get they want to give him another opportunity given the financial investment they have remaining, however why bring him back against Seattle?

Maybe they want to set him up for failure….get him out quickly and move on……

The Astros have fast tracked Abreu when they should have slow tracked him. He has more issues than hitting, his fielding is also a weakness.

The Astros don’t need him right now. Although Singleton is a below average hitter, he has some pop, plus he’s a good fielder.

Also, when Abreu was with the team, CF and C were weaknesses, but now those two positions are team strengths. In other words, the starting lineup is stronger since Abreu has been gone.

Better to bring him along slowly with the intent of using him in July or August. IMO, there shouldn’t be a time frame. Let his progress, or lack thereof, be the deciding factor. If he fails to progress, Abreu may be released at the end of the season.

On anther subject, Bregman better figure out his offense because Pedro Leon is ripping MiLB at 3rd base, which makes Bregman a plausible trade candidate.

If Bregman doesn’t improve his production, trade him for an up-and-coming 1st base prospect, or a proven first baseman, or multiple prospects and promote Leon, thus reducing the payroll to possibly resign Tucker.

I would have had Abreu play at Sugar Land for 2 weeks

Bregman is gone….

Tucker will get signed……plenty of dough coming off the books in the next two years.

I agree we need to see what Leon can do as well as Whitcomb……both are much better options than Kessinger.
