I also think the argument is highly regional.
When teams with an actual following come to the states, they do multiples of the NHL’s attendance numbers. Barca has filled up the Rose Bowl a couple of times for meaningless friendlies. Club America’s annual US tour puts about 50k per stop in NFL stadiums. What kinda numbers are neutral-site NHL preseason games doing?

Based on TV ratings and attendance, the following for pro ice hockey is indeed greater than for pro soccer in the USA.

Professional Hockey Viewing Near Midtown Houston

Being able to fit all of the Hockey-watchers in Houston into one sports bar is not a winning argument.
As if every soccer watcher in Houston fits into the bar you mentioned. Don’t be silly now.
I simply pointed out that, just as there are bars that focus on soccer, there are also bars in Houston that put a lot of emphasis on hockey.
Ojos Locos is a chain with multiple locations.
The only proper Hockey bar in Houston (the Maple Leaf) is currently vacant, whereas the actual soccer bar in Houston (Pitch 25) is expanding.
There is more than one bar in Houston that shows a lot of hockey.
And Ojos Locos is mostly about something other than soccer.
It’s a “breastaurant” chain.
But is there more than one in Houston that you can find a lot of hockey watchers at, game-in and game-out?
Again…most of the people at Ojos Locos aren’t there for soccer.
They are there for the “breastaurant” thing, if you know what I mean.
Why isn’t there a hockey-themed national breastaurant chain if it’s so popular?
Breastaurant chains aren’t sports themed.
They are “you know what” themed.
Soccer is a pretty huge element of their brand, probably third behind the obvious two.
Can’t say the same about Hockey anywhere.
Their brand…like Hooters, Twin Peaks, etc., is NOT about soccer.
It’s about…you know…whacking material.
Soccer definitely is part of the thing that differentiates them from other players in the market, like the aforementioned Hooters, Twin Peaks, etc.
I can order a soccer ball beer bong at Ojos Locos. Where can I order a hockey puck beer bong? Talk about willingness to spend.
I would say that besides whacking material…the next biggest thing about their brand isn’t soccer.
