I understand that we need to give Fritz some time, and, at this point, the season feels like a throwaway.
However, Houston has always had a legacy of a high-flying, historic level offense (half of the offensive records for the NCAA are held by us).
Even when we’re not doing well, it’s because we’re losing games 54-45. Prolific offense has always been our identity.
Even in our “bad” offensive years, we were still far better than what we’re seeing this season.
We criticized Travis Bush as an OC, but that team averaged 30 points a game, scored a touchdown in every game, and only had fewer than 24 points twice that season.
We disliked Major Applewhite’s offense, yet during his tenure, he was never shut out and scored at least two touchdowns in every game, whether as OC or HC.
The bar has been lowered significantly, and those past offenses, which we once criticized, would now be a dream compared to what we have.
There’s a real chance we’re witnessing the worst offense in program history, and it’s disheartening when you consider the brand we’ve built for so long.
We are laying groundwork for next years Big 12 FB Schedule . . . . . This year, one of the toughest schedules in the country. Maybe, just maybe, next year will be one of the easy ones . . . . .
At least SMU wouldn’t score 77 on the defense, but this offense is never going to score the 63 that UH team did.
You can see a salty D has kept us in games against two Top 25 teams in OU and ISU. If we beat ranked teams no one will be worrying about our offense not being exciting. The winning will be the excitement. Play smart strong football and give yourself a chance vs the best is our curent philosophy.
And of course even on the basketball board Coogfans complain about our bball offense but Sampson keeps winning with defense and never takes Pesik advice.
Our football brand has become offensive, for sure.
The old saying that “defense wins championships” utterly fails when there’s no semblance of an offense to complement it. Defense obviously can’t win championships if it can’t win games, unless our defense starts scoring, it’s just going to be a “yeah but” at the end of the season.
In general, fans are more likely to get behind a “rebuild” based on offensive firepower, rather than a stingy defense. Getting beat by 20-30 points sucks either way, but you can at least get people to come back if the offense is scoring TDs because it gives some semblance of hope.
I love being known for defense, if that’s the way it’s gonna be. Just win the game and you’ll be surprised how satisfying a low scoring game can be. Defensive travels, as they say. I’ve never been one that celebrates explosive offense in place of winning. I want to score one more point than the other guy.
Man you are 100 percent right. Let me tell you how reputation can proceed someone or something. I was at a conference last week having lunch with someone I had never met. When I mentioned that I went to UH, the first words out of his mouth were “run & shoot”. He then talked about how UH always had high flying offenses and good QB play. After the initial excitement, he then he asked what’s happened.
That pretty much sums up the current state of our football program.
Harrell wasn’t go be a big success in the b10 because those schools have athletic and disciplined LB’s that can shut down a pass happy hair-on-fire scheme.
He’d do better with that shtick in the sunbelt or MWC.
