Spirit has first class?!
I tried Spirit one time, and I had to endure a 9-month saga to get my money back after they canceled my flight. Never again.

I have no intent to ever fly Spirit after my only experience, they make Greyhound look good.
I flew Spirit last 2 years ago to ATL, wasn’t as bad as the LAS flight I took 7 years prior. They’ve made some improvements for sure.
Their 1st class is kinda weird looking on the web…haven’t seen it in person. Probably won’t for a while. I only fly them when the deal is really good…they do have some, but not where I’ve been going lately.
Almost booked them to SAP in Honduras until I found the United to Roatan anomaly. Effing hell…I probably would have gone to Roatan last year too had I seen the price they SHOULD have been offering.
We fly to Chile from Austin.
$660 vs $1500
I take Spirit and Frontier between IAH and ATL all the time. It’s like an $80 flight. Spending like $150 for a little extra legroom and maybe WiFi and a movie just ain’t worth it for me.
It’s more for an Uber to the airport than a Spirit flight from IAH to ATL.
United monopoly on gates at Bush and SW at Hobby is the reason.
I’ll never understand how it’s twice as expensive to make a single flight (Houston to Roatan) as compared to making that same flight plus an extra flight (Austin to Houston).
Unless the airline is taking a big loss on the Austin-Houston flight, it doesn’t make any sense.
If the airline makes profit on the Austin-Roatan flight, then it’s absolutely ripping off the non-stop customers… making an unconscionable profit.
“Unconscionable profit” probably doesn’t make sense to some, who worship money and gladly trade their souls for it.
It’s a supply and demand thing. Would you rather pay more to fly Houston to Roatan with a layover in Austin, or directly from Houston? The answer is pretty obviously the direct flight. Hence people are willing to pay more, and the airline can and should charge more.
It sucks (for us) but you charge what the market allows. And it’s not like airlines are exactly killing it (although UAL has had a nice run lately).
Also they are trying to fill all the seats per flight, so connecting might accomplish this.
What UA overcharges I have made up by holding onto their shares. UA is not perfect, but I am loyal to them especially when compared to other airlines. It is nice to have a dedicated number to call UA and hear “Welcome back CgrBkr…” when they answer.
They have to satisfy their stockholders. It has nothing to do with customers. When stockholders are removed from the equation then it is possible to be happy with reasonable profits.
Since when is *ucking your customers good business practice?
It’s not. Never has been. It creates ill will in it’s customer base which is the exact opposite of what a company should do.
Some of you guys don’t mind being screwed. I guess you’re used to it. Wake up. There’s no reason to accept this crapola.
Also, this is only possible because there is not actual free market in aviation. In free markets there is competition to prevent this kind of bs. Instead, they have a captive market. That’s why it can and should be regulated. We’ve seen it from the beginning of time. When any company had a monopoly on something they over charge. The only way to stop them is to introduce more competition or regulate them. Pick your poison but this crap needs to go.
To be fair the airlines are one of the most regulated industries around. To keep up with the regs requires a lot of capital and revenue, not to mention legal fees. These are huge barriers to entry for new and smaller players, and even the incumbent majors often find it worthwhile to merge or buy each other.
Fewer regulations might be less safe but it would allow more competition. Or would you rather Pan Am gets the transatlantic route monopoly back?
I’ve been flying to Santiago by driving to Austin for years. Here’s the scenario: We drive over, drop off who’s flying out. They connect through Houston or Dallas (on the former they usually make it back to Houston as we’re hitting Katy.)
Then they fly 10-11 hrs to Santiago. On the return trip they take their baggage off in Customs in Houston and we pick them up outside Bush.
My wife went to Chile around Jan 20th. We checked the prices:
Est. $1400 direct from Houston
Est. $660 from Austin connecting through Houston
I don’t understand it. But I’m a simple man. A veritable mouse in the world of the bear. I follow the cheese and hope I don’t get eaten.
